I was out at my Grandfather's home place today and ran across his old hog scalding tub. When they killed hogs they would dip them into boiling water and then scrap the hair off. This thing was cast in the 1870's and has spent its entire life outside. Amazing how well that old cast iron holds up. May need to get some lard and season it up.

This is the bottom look how well the writing has held up.

Pretty sweet. I'd check for snakes then get after restoring it.

Might need a forklift for that thing. Maw maw has an old sugar kettle about that size and I thought my big arse could move it. Barely got it off the ground

That calls for a good bon fire and many beers drank seasoning that thing back pretty.

I haven't seen one of those in many years. Great find.

There used to be one at one of my grandma's house.

man, that is pretty awesome...be careful, or someone will take that thing.

also, I see that it is around a bunch of other iron...be sure it doesn't get some junk dropped on it that will crack it.

That's awesome. Will be dipping one in a few weeks. The water should be around 140 degrees for best results, not boiling.

I used to go to western Illinois to butcher hogs for 2 weeks at my grandparents house. We used a scalding pot very similar to that and a spoom/ladle.

No real need to "season". They were typically used for just water not much else. Light a fire under it a time or two and burn the rust. You can rub a bit of oil to keep the rust at a minimum but they are made for that.

Probably the size of tub- like a #3 washtub.
