Anyone familiar with the 6R80 transmission and the molded lead frame replacement? Apparently, there is a recall, but my truck has +175,000 miles on it, so it is not covered.

My truck has recently started having some downshifting issues. Based on my limited research, all signs point toward the molded lead frame being the issue. Not sure this is something I am able to DIY. Anyone done this before? Cost of repair?

I am currently having my 6R80 rebuilt.

185,000 miles
2015 F150

The torque converter is the issue on these trannys, I am told.

The first guy quoted me $6,200. I found the other guy that said no more than $3,500, worst case scenario. He got my truck this morning. I am hoping to know more by the end of the day Monday.

What symptoms were you experiencing?

Mine recent issue is a sudden downshift. Rolling in 5th or 6th gear and all of a sudden it drops to 1st, locking up rear tires.

Good luck getting the part. My truck has been sitting on a Ford dealership since 12/14/22 waiting on it. Transmission started locking into 5th gear with two weeks left on the ten year extended warranty for that part. It is on national back order.
Cost is more than $3000.00

Are these the 10 speeds that GM and Ford share?

And don't feel bad, I truck has been in the shop since Oct and still don't have it.

Ford 6-speed autos based on a ZF design.

Okay, I want a Ford with the 5.0 bad but all the issues with the 10 speeds is keeping me to a Ram or Titan XD.

Yes, 2011 5.0 with 190K miles. Replaced the lead frame myself early last year only for the issue to return 8 months later. Job was pretty easy if you want to give it a try, FordTechMakuloco has a perfect walkthrough video on it.

Put in a new trans, $5500 installed & smooth sailing now. I probably could have price shopped more but I was in a bind with family going ons at the time and needed the truck back asap. 5 year 300k warranty on parts and labor.

Not buying a new or even decent used truck at these prices, I’ll just ride this one til it dies.

Just curious but why would miles determine a recall and not a part that was used.

So, I’m guessing if you hit 150k miles you’ve used the vehicle past it’s scheduled life and you should consider yourself lucky?

I’ve never had a Ford. When I was a kid my uncle had just bought a brand new ford Taurus. the 1st design of it.
He was so proud of it.
Took me for a ride with my dad and grandfather. We got back to the house and I grabbed the handle to open the door and it popped right off.
My uncle thought I did something to the car and was pretty mad.

That’s why I’ve never had a ford.
This “recall” would definitely keep me from changing my mind.

$3000 for parts and labor for lead frame only? That's sounds very high. You can damn get a new transmission for that.

This is my thought, too. And I've watched the video you mentioned. That guy is very knowledgeable and has lots of great videos. The work involved just seems a little intimidating to me. I'd likely get it taken apart and then say frick it and ultimately paying much more than it should have cost. I've had several projects end up like that ..hahah

Yeah it wasn’t a walk in the park but doable with a lift and some tools.

If you’re not going to buy a new truck I’d just bite the bullet and find a reputable trans shop asap, it will continue to degrade until the truck is unusable. If you’re in the nola area, Angelo’s transmission did great work for me, old school business, honest & timely.

None. All of a sudden, it went into safe mode where I could only get up to 15-20 mph.

A day later, I was told it would not go into reverse at all.
