What's the point in changing synthetic that frequently? Do you tow in hilly terrain 90% of the time?

Nope but the most common failure on GM dod engines is the mechanism that drops out the cylinders getting gunked up with carbon and crud from oil so I change it frequently to prevent it.

What kind of oil was being used? GM's DEXOS spec is very stringent and requires high detergency in the oil. Carbon and sludge would not be an issue with any oil that meets that spec.

Stop and go driving is some hardest miles you will ever put on your engine especially with turbos. Oversized MT tires that are 2x the weight of OEM exaggerates this even more.

I used to follow the OLM on my GMC until it started burning 3qts of oil every 5k miles.

Either way the difference between getting your oil changed at 5k and 7.5k is like $200-$300 over 100k miles.

I can't answer that, our company mechanic was a GM tech for several years before coming to work here and I'm just doing what he told me to do to avoid a possible problem is all.

Mine has over 200k miles, Towed hard it's whole life.

The oil was never changed before the oil life monitor said to, it was always conventional oil, and it still doesn't burn or leak a noticeable amount. Sometimes the light came on at 3k and sometimes as long as 7k depending on what it was doing.

Just do what the manual says. The people who write the book know more than us internet nazis.

This

I got 200k out of my last Ford before I sold it. I never had an oil problem. The new one will be treated the same way.

As a guideline I agree but the manual is written more for their protection over hundreds of thousand of customers doing a broad variety of things in various conditions. They will be on the conservative end assuming worst case scenario.

I've seen a Hyundai Elantra with 25k miles on the oil pull in to my ol mans shop. That was impressive.

Right.

Too many people think the manual is written to sell cars, and it isn't. If it says use conventional oil, use conventional. If it says use synthetic and change it every 15k miles, do that. If it says use low ash cj-4 only, then only use that.

There's a lot of overthinking here. Read the instructions and follow them. Save your brain for other stuff.

A lot of over spending, I never understood why the average truck driving Joe spends more for synthetic. One of the main benefits is extending your oil life, if you are going to change it every 3-5k miles conventional oil works great...
