I live in the Dallas area but my dad has a place out of state that has a lot of trout (which I'm good at cooking but not good at catching). Dad has tried to teach me to fly fish, but gets mad . Do you know of a fly fishing school in the Dallas area or a good video?

Any guidance would be appreciated. Thank you.

+1

In the meantime, just look up Lefty Kreh videos on casting instruction on youtube. He is the master and his techniques are easy to learn.

Get the fundamentals first. Shooting line and double hauls come with practice and more practice.

I can't even do the basics.

Thanks for the info.

depending on where you are in the metro, check with Orvis in Plano or Backwoods in Fort Worth. Backwoods also does a free fly tying class every Wednesday evening that is worth checking out. Both should have some type of 101 class. Alternatively, book a trip with Rob Woodruff on the Lower Mountain Fork once it opens back up (about 3 hours from dallas).

The OB FF thread is where we all congregate. Look at the videos I posted on the first page and ask any questions you want in there.

Take a piece of string/small rope or whatever and tie it into a loop that's a few inches larger than your wrist.

Take the butt of the fly rod and put in the loop and around your wrist.
Go out in your yard and start casting on the back cast wait until the line lays all the way out and stop. Do not start you forward cast until the line is on the ground. Then make your forward cast.

Do that 10-20 times. Then learn how that feels then try to cast with the line in the air again wait for the line to straighten out but not hit the ground.

Once you get use to that then take the loop off your wrist.

By the way hold the line in your non casting hand while you're casting.

ETA: the purpose of the loop on your wrist is to keep you from breaking your wrist on the back cast. The rod should be pointed straight up to barely past.
