You're 14 hour On Duty is continuous, once you go On Duty the only way to get a fresh 14 is to shut down/sleeper for 10 hours. So using that example if a driver shows up to load and they tell him it'll be 5 hours, he can get in his sleeper and mark Off Duty and do whatever he'd like, but he'd have to remain there(Off Duty) for 10 hours to get a fresh 14(On Duty). Makes sense?

No, it doesn't make any sense at all. Which means it must be right!

Give me a sec, illustration pending.

ETA: I give up on the illustration.

Key Points:
*Your 14 hour On Duty is continuous and cannot be broken up with sleeper time
*Your allowed 11 hours of Driving time within that 14 hour On Duty cycle.
One of those can not surpass the other, if you go On Duty at 6am, at 8pm your day is done, you must shut down, even if you haven't driven 11 hours within that 14 hour period. Likewise, if you run out of your 11 hour driving time before your 14 hour On Duty time is up, then you still must shut down.

Basically, you may not exceed 11 hours of driving in a continuous 14 hour on duty shift.

I think he may of understood the rules. It's the enforcement that is doesn't make logical sense (like many laws).

I kinda feel for the truck driver though. If I'm sitting in someone's yard waiting to get loaded I want to get paid no matter how nice my cab is. If my arse isn't home I want someone to compensate me for that.

Bonus joke as told to me by a trucker:

Very wealthy guy has brain cancer. Only way to save him is a total brain replacement (very expensive). So the rich guy (like billionaire wealthy) says to the doc, "how much is this going to cost me? Doc says, "well for 100 million we can get you a brain from a lawyer". Rich guy says "100mil? thats nothing. But If I'm getting a new brain I want to very very best. What does that cost?" Doc says, "the very best one costs 500mill and is a trucker brain." Rich guy says " A trucker brain! why the hell would that be the best?" Doc; "like new, never been used".

If you are on electronic logs, you lose all of it. Your On duty time for the day still clicks away, and will eat into your driving time, you can go off duty, and it stays on your 70,but it still counts against your 14 for the day. On E-logs, as soon as you do your pre trip in the morning your 14 is clicking away, and there is no way to stop it,except to sit for 10 hours. There is a split sleeper thing, but it hurts more than it helps.

well, I checked back in w/o refreshing, looks like you got the right info already.

Drivers will just start charging by the hour beyond a reasonable waiting time to be loaded or off loaded, we've had them do it before when a machine breaks down or something doesn't happen as planned and we don't balk if understandable, my time isn't free so why should theirs be free? If you don't like the terms hold out for someone hungry, not many hungry right now though.

I just bought my nephew who is a truck driver a van, flat bed, and lowboy.
He been staying busy doing specialty equipment loads for the oilfield.
His flatbed he hauls hay to the Midwest during the fall and winter.
His truck stays running which was a different story a year ago.

It's times like these Inam thankful I am no longer in the brokering business with CH Robinson. When capacity tightens up all those guys you low balled in the last get their turn to kick your teeth in. I would throw down two cans of red seal a day back then.

Worst was having 60 ft truss loads that you bid on a year earlier. OD freight gets real pricey when things get tight.
