We have a 12' x 8' area between the house and the garage and will be laying flagstone down and will surround it with dwarf mondo grass, similar to what's pictured here:

Here are my questions:

The proper way to lay the stones would be to dig out 4-5", lay limestone, sand, then the stones. What I'm worried about is will there be enough dirt above the sand and limestone to hold water and sustain the mondo grass? I would imagine the sand would fill all gaps within the limestone when leveling, but I'd hate to plant all that grass to have it die out.

We have a drain in that area that runs under the driveway and empties into the yard via a French drain. Should I block off the drain and build the ground level up to the concrete where the water runs off or leave the drain? And if it is left in place, will there be any way to have it out of sight and still be effective? I'm thinking of just blocking it off.

Also not ruling out having gutters placed in the area, but that seems like it would be more expensive than its worth.

Thanks.

1- If you have someone that cuts your grass currently, he's gonna quit.

2- If you cut it yourself, you'll get tire of it and hire it out. See #1.

I think you'd be fine. I just used decomposed granite in between my dry laid flagstone. I have to apply weed killer all the time to keep the zoysa grass and weeds down. (i'm going for a different look than you).

I basically did something similar to this:

Is limestone under the flagstone necessary? I would think using a shovel to "grade" the spot where placing the flagstone would be all that's needed. Then plant the grass.

I'm no landscape architect.

I don't feel like it is as this will have very, very minimal traffic and we aren't staying in this house for ever. If it looks like poo in 5 years I don't care, I wont be living there.

I feel like leveling as much as possible with the dirt, then filling with sand to grade would be fine.

I cut my own grass. And this stuff doesn't grow, so why would it need to be cut? And if it does grow, its a small area and I will weed whack that stuff into oblivion.

I've installed a couple dozen of these type applications, and have never used limestone. Just sand.
Also, the mondo, once it gets established, will prevent erosion

You'll be fine. In-laws have a similar setup. Mondo grass is nearly impossible to kill.

Mondo grass doesn't grow in a manner that needs to be trimmed.
