Well the softball state tournament is next weekend, April 28-29th, and if my school St Amant makes it I'll probably go. While I'm down there in Sulphur, I would love to do some fishing at Calcasieu. Where are some good spots to fish by land or possibly by kayak? And what should I use? Live bait or soft plastics? Thanks.

You can launch at spicers and fish the marsh around there.

Or there's a launch on hwy 27 that goes to the west side of west cove. Go through the weir and a half mile or so paddle will put you in west cove. Should be able to catch a few reds at either place with shrimp.

How to get to west cove

Spicers may have live shrimp but I would call first.

The people that are catching, which are very few, are fishing on the east side of the lake. Basket reef etc..

Sulphur is on west side of lake. You can launch kayak at Choupique Bayou, Spicers, Hog Island Gully and West Cove. Given the rain, further south would be better. For trout.

If you are Kayak fishing I'd go to West Cove. All of the spots in there are (semi) close together and there are some good marsh cuts for when the tide is moving.

I think all of this rain has really fricked with the salinity of anything north of the lake. As far as bait I am always a fan of Norton Sand Eels. Can also throw a Voodoo Shrimp under a popping cork if you want to go that route.

Good luck. Report back if you catch anything!
