I'm on a shoestring budget. What's your setup/size? Any specific tarp material I need to look for? Also, what do you do if there are no trees around? What are some inexpensive options for poles? I'll be camping with a 4-person tent.

If you already have a 4 person tent, I don't really understand your question. Are you looking for rain/overhead protection or ground protection?

I usually use a cheap, wal-mart medium duty tarp for additional ground protection, and use the rain fly the tent came with for water resistance. Does the tent not have a rain fly?

I am assuming you have a rainfly with your tent, so you are looking for extra ground cover.

As long as you have a halfway decent tent and don't plan on camping in a monsoon, just the tent should be fine. A normal tarp sized to be 3 inches or so smaller than the footprint of the tent if you really want it.

Yes, the tent has a rain fly. Looking for a canopy to go over the picnic table and such for extra shade and rain shower protection. Something to string between trees and if there are no trees close by, what kind of inexpensive options are there for poles.

This is how I setup my tarps as tents with no trees around. Get a decent set of hiking poles to make this work and some cordage.

Setup Tarp like a tent

*Edit* NM, I see you already have a tent, disregard.

Just get an Easy Up or Walmart version. By the time you buy the poles, tarp, and various other things involved, you'd be more than halfway to the price of a good canopy, and putting tall enough poles into the ground would be a bitch.

Yep, last time I went luxury camping we had one of these over two tents and a yuge 30x20 tarp on the ground. Worked really well. We had 2.5" rain over 3 days and the tent was still almost entirely dry inside.

Also if there are trees around you can use string, bungees or ratchet straps and a tarp to put an extra "roof" up if you don't want to lug around that E-Z up
