Going in late November.

What do I need aside from a gun/optics(on loan from a long time, responsible Hunter who I'll be going in the woods with)?

Thanks!

I should also add:

I took my required Hunter safety course, 10+ hour in person class, and obtained a license.

And also, we've practiced with the rifle I'll be using, and going once more before our hunt.

Warm clothing. I lived in Mentor, east of Cleveland, for about three years. Winters were miserable.

Yah, definitely layers.

Long Johns, couple pair of socks, etc.

And planning on getting a good pair of boots.

Ohio has some strange hunting laws. Especially for deer, just be sure you know them and are completely legal with everything you do.

Also, it’s cold as frick up here right now. Think the high today was 40. Layer, layer, layer.

Be sure of your target and what's behind it.

A range finder and good binoculars.

Thanks for the safety tip.

I was going more for gear advice.

Safety is clearly the most important thing, but has been stressed with me for years and re-emphasized in the hunter safety course I completed.

Does Ohio allow rifles? I thought they were a shotgun only state.

They allow straight wall cartridge rifles for a week in late November/early December.

As much orange as you can wear... especially if Ohio has a short season. Folks go trigger crazy in short seasons.

You might be familiar with cold weather, but be smart. Layers are important, and try to avoid sweating on the hike in; i.e. less layers (carry your jacket/vest in.) Good gloves/mittens, keep your feet warm, and have head gear for heat retention.

And as a first timer, avoid neck and head shots... boiler-room shots (heart/lung) only.

And finally, post a photo of your kill for us to enjoy, with proper OB boot placement. Those deer get big up there.

Good pair of binoculars on stand really help to pass the time and are much safer than using your scope to view things. Anyone that tells you they don't use their scope when they don't have binos are lying.

Hand warmers and boot warmers. It's impossible to describe the cold you get while hunting and sitting still for 4 hours at a time compared to normal activity. It will be much colder then you expect.

Cotton clothing is not the most conducive in keeping warm. Look into a base layer, then insulation layer, followed by a jacket that is wind and rain proof. Definitely wear a warm insulated hat since body heat escapes from the head.

Merino Wool is your friend, especially in socks. If temps get below freezing, and your toes sweat wearing cotton socks, you may end up like Rulon Gardner. ....... Well, not really but you get the point.

I have a nice pair of REI low temp socks I plan on wearing, and an under armor top/REI lower set of long johns.

Not sure the middle or outer layer yet. Looking for the outer layer and boots for around $200 total if I can.
