They used to have the choice between the Glock 19 and the Colt M45A1 in .45 ACP. Everyone chose the Glock, so they're ditching the .45. Chalk up another win for the good guys.

Now, it would appear that for both military and law-enforcement use the .40 is quickly losing ground. Most agencies, led by the FBI—which recently switched to the Glock 19—are not even looking at 40 S&W. And the major gun manufacturers that typically supply law enforcement have seen a precipitous drop in demand for .40 S&W duty guns. There are new models being brought out by major makers, such as the Ruger American Pistol, that did not even bother with the .40 S&W.

This was the biggest surprise to me

I've seen this in pretty much any gun store I've been in lately. It's also apparent when the online price of the 40 S&W version of a gun is a couple hundred dollars cheaper and on sale.

I paid almost $900 for my Sig P226 in 9mm and the same pistol can be found online in .40 for like $380. That's a crazy difference.

Safe to say also a slow death to the 45 and 357 sig.

My local gun store hardly had any 45 and 357 sig. With modern advancement in bullets 9mm is all you really need.

Doesn't the military only use FMJ, though?

Forgive my stupidity, I don't keep up with the .40 S&W or 9mm boards.

What is the reasoning for switching from M45 to the G19, mainly? Is it clip size, recoil difference, etc? I'm assuming it's not a stopping power debate.

Also what's the deal with the .40 S&W dying off, lack of ammunition, bullet dynamics (too close to the 9mm)?

Thank you for your trouble.

40, 45, 357 sig all have more power than the 9mm but they have way to much recoil to the point where it is not manageable at all.

9mm is king.

I have shot pistols less than probably 95% of this board. I recently shot a friend's .40 Glock, and was really surprised how manageable it was. I was scared it was going to turn my head into a canoe.

9mm is for limp wristed fairies and rap music videos.

.40 is for white sunglass wearing affliction shirt owning trend following D bags

357sig is for edgy cool kids who are so cool because they are so different. They want everyone to like their caliber but if everyone actually did like it, they'd shoot something different.

.45acp is for old people

.357 magnum is for men.

No way. Recoil from a 40 will knock you down. Plus, that 40 barrel is probably worn out now. Need to buy a new one.
