My grandmother passed recently and she left all of her grandkids a few bucks.

She was on the LSU rifle team a long time ago. So I want to buy my son a rifle that came from "her" and am curious of everyone's thoughts.

Would you go with a .22 that he can use when he is young and forever or would you go with an adult caliber?

Appreciate any input.

This would be his "first" rifle even if it is a large caliber and can't shoot it for a long time.

Also, new/used and caliber recs appreciated

.22 - you just can't go wrong with that. I'd get him a bolt action so that he'd learn to make each shot count and no scope until after he learns some accuracy with sights.

.22 without a doubt.

Everyone needs at least one .22 rifle.

Browning SA22. Best grade your can afford. I had a grade 3 before it was stolen a few years ago.

how old is the kid? Does he like hunting? If so what is he interrested in most? If just shooting i agree with the 22... but if he plans on hunting, i would definitely get something different

Alright. .. thank you all. That's what I was leaning towards because as I said, .22 is first and forever kinda rifle.

Thank you for the help

He's 7 months old

He may grow up and dislike firearms. I just want to use the money "from her" to buy a rifle "from her" .

Everyone should own a 22

I love my bolt CZ452. IMHO, a bolt gun is better for starting a kid out than something like a 10/22. Forces them to pay attention to the details, where a semi-auto is just point and shoot a bunch of times. My 452 also has open sights adjustable to 200m. I don't think they make them anymore, but they do make a 455. Should set you back $350-400

CZ 452 or 455. If you get the 455, you can get a .22 and .17 barrel for it.

I like the .22 option, but I personally would buy him a Model 7 in either 7mm-08 or .243.

7 mos old -

I was in the process of typing a diatribe about Hunt Jr's first rifle (7mm-08 btw) and my thoughts etc and read the age and thought . - 22 - can't go wrong.

Also consider investing in a lifetime hunt/fish License - very cheap at that age at least on Louisiana.

Let us know what you decide

I'd get a Henry golden boy .22

You can learn everything there is to know about guns from that thing and it will last forever.

Ruger 10/22. Reasonably priced, dependable, customizable and there are a lot of aftermarket accessories for them.

.22 would be my first choice.

If you wanted to go a little bigger on the caliber, a .22-250 is an awesome caliber as well. Perfect for varmints and smaller hogs, I've seen it put down a pretty decent sized fallow deer, ran about 4 steps before dropping.

Well since it's not your money, a NULA Model 20 rimfire. Might as well make it something special.
