Ferris 48" stand on mower

Anyone have experience with Ferris stand in mowers? Can pick a brand new one up for 6200, which I think is a damn good price. Only negative issue I see is it has aluminum blade spindles. I do lawns as a part time deal. Your thoughts?

We had one when I worked summers doing lawn care. It was probably the most dependable mower the guy owned. I believe it had a 14 hp manual start Kawasaki engine. He had the stand up dolly and the sit down one. Never a problem with the spindals.

For $6200 you can get a Ferris IS700Z with a 52" deck.
I see a few people use those stand on mowers but I've never used one. Is there some advantage to using them over a ZTR?

I'd rather sit than stand personally. Aluminum spindle housings is nothing of concern. They dissipate heat faster than cast iron. And yes, if you hit something hard enough it will break. But that's better than cast iron not having any give and you bend your deck on an impact. A spindle costs way less than major deck work.

Valid point in the aluminum spindle housings.
The stand ons are perfect for most yards. They have a much smaller footprint than either a zero turn or a walk behind. Much easier to get onto and off of than a sit down rider.
If you have extremely large properties then the sit down may be the answer.

If you do a lot of smaller yards having to get inside gates it is a great mower.

The advantages of a stand on in general are the ease of getting on and off to clear debris, (shorter length) commercial crews can fit more on a trailer, they are lighter than a true zero turn, typically cheaper than a sit on zero turn of the same size and quality. Negatives are you you are standing so it is inherently less comfortable, however have your knees as a shock absorber on bumpy ground can be helpful at times. Also, the controls can take some getting used to.
