This is the code...P0345 Camshaft Position Sensor Trouble Code

everything I read online says that the truck should be running bad. My truck runs fine and I plugged my scanner in and got the code and cleared it and it hasn't come back on yet today. Could it have been just a freak thing? I had just unhooked a big tandem axle trailer at the time.

yessir.

Most can't DIY. Very labor intensive and technical.

I've seen instances where codes were thrown and nothing was actually wrong with the vehicle. The computer sometimes gets false information and will throw a code just to be safe. The 4.6 is not notorious for the cam phaser issues that the 5.4, 3 valve was. If the truck is running fine and not making a loud constant tick, I wouldn't worry about it as long as it doesn't keep throwing the code. If it does it again though, then it might be the time to start thinking about getting rid of it or getting it looked at by a professional if you don't want to get rid of it.

In my opinion it was on par with the 5.4.

Why are you thinking this?

I have a good friend who is a mechanic. I worked at his shop in the body side of it all through high school and college. He's worked on countless Fords from 04-10 with the 5.4 and 4.6. In his experiences with these motors it's not even close in comparison the number of 5.4 3 valves that had the issue with the loud tick and cam phaser failure issues as the 4.6. From 04-08 before they updated the 5.4, almost every engine from that range that he worked on had some sort of issues pertaining to the cam phasers. In 09 the problem was fixed for the most part, as was the issue with the spark plugs that always broke off in the heads.

If I had to put a number on it from what I've seen over the years with those two engines, I would say that 4/5 of the 5.4's from 04-08 would have those issues, where only 1/5 of the 4.6's would have the same issues.

From my personal experience the 4.6 was far less likely to suffer the same issues as the 5.4.

This is from engine builder mag: Link to article

quote:

The cam phasers on the 3V 4.6L engines can also tend to be noisy, producing a light knocking sound at idle. This is normal, Ford says. But if the noise is excessive (under 1,200 rpm) or there are cam-related fault codes, the problem may be a bad variable cam timing phaser that needs to be replaced.
