Keeping up with the jonesin is only good to an extent. Lots of people love the 5.3 for a good reason: the damn thing just keeps running.

Thats why I am about to get another one, like I said earlier, you cant beat dependability.

And after my upgrades it will be running close if not better than F&D

Spend the same money that you would on the worn 5.3 on the Ford or Dodge and then youd have something!

Okay so just checked the specs on the different motors and well, DAMN.

360 hp @ 5,500 rpm - 5.0
365 hp @ 5,000 rpm - ECOB

295 hp ( 220kw ) @ 5200 rpm - 5.3

This is unacceptable, Chevy has to step there game up. The 5.3 is capable of producing a lot more power than what they are getting out of it. I have been a life long GM man and damn near a anti Ford guy but they are starting to loose me. Its a real shame Dodge cant figure out how to put a decent transmission in a truck.

Yeah it's sad when the Ram's 4.7 is putting out more hp than GMs 5.3. And, as I mentioned, the new hemi's have 390hp @ 5000ish rpm. Good thing GMs 6.2 is a badass motor. That's the one good thing about GM is that all of the V8s are LS block based...almost like the lego's of engines.

As far as the Ram transmission, they are working on it. Thought the 545rfe/65rfe currently offered isn't terrible...I put 90,000 miles on my old 2004 and currently have 32,000 on my 2011 - 0 issues. My dad also put 120,000 on his 2004 Durango and had 0 trans. issues. But, once you start adding power, or get the heat up, the 545 normally shits the bed thanks to the weak overdrive clutch packs. Ram is about to introduce the 8 speed into the trucks though, so hopefully that proves to be a good trans.

The thing that pisses me off is that the 5.3 is a great motor and if tuned right can easily hold its own if not top all other motors in its class.

Yup. That would be the only thing that would make me consider a GMC/Chevy. The LS platform has a MASSIVE aftermarket and therefore it doesn't take a lot in mods to make a 5.3 a very potent V8.

But when you're talking stock trucks, they have to do something with the 5.3. They can't keep selling that truck with that engine at that price for much longer...the competition is too stiff. Only people that would keep coming back are die-hard GM guys.

I still see plenty brand new ones running around though. People really like the 5.3 for what it is.

Brand loyalty is very strong with GM. I admire that and respect it. There is nothing wrong with the 5.3 and they will still sell. However, anybody who is not a diehard fan will be hard pressed to buy a truck with the weakest motor out there.

How can you be loyal to a brand that can't support itself and is now owned primarily by the government. How anyone would buy anything, but Ford is beyond me. I have and Ecoboost and it is and awesome truck right off of the lot. After adding a leveling kit 35" tires and a SCT programmer it is a total beast. It is scary how fast it is and the gas millage is incredible for a 4x4 truck with that size tire. 15 mpg in the city and 20 on the interstate going 75 to 80 pretty hard to beat. Besides that it is such a better looking truck than a gm or dodge why would you choose anything else!

Well while I agree with half your post, the other half is just wrong. I agree that it's sad that they had to take a buyout and enjoy my Ford more and more because they didn't. However, GM is not primarily owned by the gvt. The gvt now owns less than 1/4 of GM. While still a large portion, they are no longer the primary owner.

Aesthetics are 100% opinionated. I love the tundras just as much as the fords, on the outside. And I like the rear coils in the Rams because I do not tow a lot. There is a reason that there are other truck manufactures and they are all doing reasonably well given the economy.

I have always been a GM guy but bought a Tundra. I have had a few bad experiences with ford in my life and just can't get past those. Not saying anything is wrong now and that any of those weren't more than 10yrs ago. I just can't make myself buy a ford.

My Tundra is badass though.

People like you are more annoying than people like me.

ETA: And I'm sure the people whose 1994-2002 F150's spontaneously combusted, or whose 6.0s had to be completely rebuilt, or who had to drop $2000 for a spark-plug change in their 5.4s can find reason enough to chose other brands. FWIW, I'm not a Ford hater at all...just can't stand the xenophobia of some Ford people.
