I would not take a Yammy for free. I am so sick of towing Yammy powered boats. You would think people would learn. But then again, we are talking about South La, and salt water people where learning is frowned upon.

Personally I've had pretty good luck with Yamahas but have seen people have lots of lower unit problems

I think the outboard debate is worse than the ford/Chevy/dodge debate

They both suck compared to the surface drive debate.

I hate that we don't have them here.

It's different, and way more fun.

They're just mindless debates because everyone is gonna rep their own brand of choice.

I'll join in. from my experience in owning only two boats so far:
1) 2004 Polar kraft with 90 merc salt water 2 stroke - I was 16 when my dad bought it and I ran the dog shite out of it for 8 years. no maintenance. nothing ever broke, it was only hard starting at times.
2013 Yamaha 4 stroke on xpress h20b - not on problem yet

no loyalty either way in my limited experience

I've had little experience with any evinrudes, but have never heard anyone complain about theirs.

My personal first choice would be yamaha and last would be Mercury. I've driven many of work boats very hard with both Yammys and Mercs (maintenance regularly)...Mercury will leave you stranded at one point or another(even on brand new motors). Yes, some people have mercury and claim they are great, but I doubt they put the constaint hours on them like we did. There is a reason you see so many charters rocking yamaha. They are very reliable.

For works boats we either used Yamaha or Honda's.

I have an Optimax 225 with 2400 hours on it that says otherwise. It could blow up tomorrow (I sure hope it doesn't), but I have had to change a compressor on it other than that it's been by far the best motor I've ever owned.

There is no end to this debate, I have had Yamaha, mercury, Suzuki, and all of them had given me problems at some point. It's just part of owning a boat/motor. Any of them can screw you on any given day.
