John Horstman of Callaway County, MO, caught a giant 19-inch black crappie while fishing with his son on a private lake near their home. The fish registered 5.02 pounds on a scale certified by the state Department of Conservation and is now the official Missouri record for the species. And if that weight holds up to IGFA certification standards, Horstman’s catch will become the new all-tackle world-record.

Aren't Black Crappie's usually smaller than White Crappie?

Hmmm.

Records for white and black are usually pretty close to one another. I find that whites look bigger, but blacks weigh more for their size.

I've seen a couple over 4 lbs. That's a big crappie.

The giant crappie, by the way, has been donated to Bass Pro Shops and will eventually circle the aquarium at their Springfield store

Unless BPS was offering a whole bunch of gift cards in return that fish would've been on my wall, not in their tank

Joebuck will be along shortly to tell you that the private lake is so big that there's fish in there that have never seen the fence/bank.

I'd donate it to BPS, they'll take great care of it.

I caught the two biggest sacalait of my life yesterday on back to back cast. They went 16" but only weighed around 2lbs, both spawned out. I couldn't imagine adding 3 more pounds to those fish

My grandfather caught 3-4 pound white Crappie every year of his life. We had one go 5 on the old zebco deliar. I tried to get him to submit them but like most old timers they went right into the frying pan.

Which is what happened to the real world record which was a 6 pound monster I think from Louisiana. They could not tell from photos whether it was a black crappie or white crappie from photos so they ask to see the fish. But he ate it so even though it was easily world record either way it didn't count

Was that from the lake that has catfish the size of a Volkswagon? Heard the divers are scared to go back.
