I just got my elk tag for Idaho Panhandle in .
I'm going on a rifle hunt with some guys that live there. They kill some monsters about every year so I'm pretty hopeful. Anyone here has hunted elk in the Idaho panhandle? Wouldn't mind hearing peoples success stories. I'm 2 months away from going and I'm getting extremely impatient
To those who have elk hunted what caliber did yall use? My uncle hunted elk his whole life and said to use a 300 win mag. The guys im going with use 270's. I decided it was time to get a new rifle and picked up a new Remington 700 300 WM.

Just north of Sandpoint. Went visit last year and its amazing country. They wanted to come for a duck hunt and I told them I'd love to elk hunt. So we are swapping hunts.

I have one if these. It's my primary deer rifle. I wish I had gone with the .300 win mag instead. WSM is stupid.

Some people told me not get the 300 WM because of the kick. A $35 limbsaver does wonders. I could literally shoot it all day without any problems with recoil.

Awesome. I have a group of friends that have gotten the bug to go since I'm going. We have a hunt in Colorado planned next year. Just get some OTC tags and see what happens.

I shot my elk with a 338 win mag at 200 yards. Dropped her on the spot.

I've been 4 times to CO. Killed a decent 5x5 my third year with a Weatherby .300 mag at 390 yards.

Good choice on the 300 WM though. Probably the most popular elk caliber. Will be my next elk rifle. Get you some Barnes TSX bullets and you will be good to go.

I always shoot hornady. I picked up some hornady custom 180 grain. It's pretty dead on at 200 yards. I was told my shot will be 25-100 yards so I saved the money instead of going with the hornady super performance

Nice! I live about 20 miles east of Coeur d'alene, but unfortunately I don't know anything about that area. What unit is that? I've got a buddy that hunts near bonners but mostly for mulies. My dad and I drew cow tags for unit 3 and are going to try to get them Labor Day weekend. Good luck.

I know I'm not hunting bonners. Just north east (I think) of Sandpoint there's a ton of public land. Unit 1 I'll be hunting.
I'll be flying into Coeur d'Alene. Good luck to y'all too man. Unfortunately I'm not able to go during bow season. They tell me it's an unreal experience.

Yeah I'm only a half assed hunter but still would like to try archery elk sometime. The bugling is awesome in September. There should still be a little of it going when you are here though.

Oh yeah don't forget to do a little jogging or something before your trip. The hills are brutal!
