I've been considering getting one for some time now. I went ahead and had a bid done just to get a starting point. Not sure if it is way out of bounds on the price but it does seem high. They quoted me $12,500 for a full install for a 16kw generator. I'm still going to shop around but definitely would like to be pointed towards some other reputable businesses.

I use B&D for my electrical service, and they install generators. What size house are you trying to power?

2000sqft. I'm not looking to power the whole house, just the essentials. From what I've gathered, their estimate of what I need seems reasonable.

Gigantic waste of money. Use a portable you can backfeed into house for emergencies

Got a portable generac 17.5 kW, had it swapped over to natural gas and it hooks to a transfer switch. Less than half the price you're looking at.

I have a 20kw, installed 2 years ago, $8300.00 That quote seems insanely high, unless they have gone up that much in 2 years. Used Magic Electric out of Covington/Mandeville.

A guy that does residential electric by the house. I'm sure anyone that deals with generators a good bit could do it.

Building a house right now. Bid for 22kw whole house generator was 5600. 2500 living 2 ac's gas heat, gas range, electric dryer and oven. That seems very very high to me. I realize yours is existing house that takes extra work to tie in but 7k more seems excessive to me.

I put in a 22kw Generac about 8 years ago, for generator, ATS, and electrical was about 10K.

Keep in mind there is a HUGE difference in cost between air cooled and liquid cooled generators.

Holy hell that seems high. You can get the generator on eBay for $4kish. Install can't be that much.

ETA...generac 16k $3600 with box. Guarantee you can get someone to install for $1500 or so.

Good to know. Definitely not a generator expert. I just don't know that I could pay 12k unless my electricity went off a LOT! lol

Or you have some medical devices that you or your family members life depends on. For the most people, they are a huge waste of money and don't add much value to your house.

My dad and Uncle installed a Generac on my Grandma's house a few years ago. I think it only cost about $6k.

But after looking at reviews for the Generac it seems it is not the best brand out there.

Yup. I'd go Kohler, Cummins/Onan, or CAT/Olympian water cooled <2000rpm natural gas unit if I was dropping the cash for one.

Yea, the more I research the more I see 12,500 is way high. If it was just a bit higher and the company had a really good reputation I don't mind paying. It isn't a main priority for me so I might just do an install in stages.

Do you need a new gas line?

Maybe thats part of the cost.
