Just found out I’ll be going to the Maasi Mara in late November next year and I’m planning on staying an extra 4 days to fly south and make a hunt. Can anyone recommend a dealer in Houston or Dallas that I could purchase a double rifle from? TIA

I’m not sure yet. My bucket would be a Cape buffalo but idk if that’s in the cards. Most likely it’ll be a Greater Kudu or Gemsbok

I hunt in Botswana every summer; you will have a blast!

And as much as I love a double rifle, you likely don’t need it. I’ve hunted with a 243, 30-06 and 375 H&H. You could take the Buffalo with a 375 (I believe that is the legal limit).

If I was taking one gun to Africa, I would bring a 300 win mag.

Have a great trip!

But, if you’re set on a double, I’d recommend the HEYM Model 88B

I highly recommend you go to the Houston Safari Club Convention on Jan 19-22, 2024.

If those dates don’t work, go to the Dallas Safari Club Convention scheduled Jan 11-14, 2014

Do your research, pick up brochures & business cards, and you’ll find answers to your dbl rifle question

wiltznucs will likely chime in if he sees this post. He knows a lot about hunting dangerous game , the Big 5, and the dark continent

Thank you for the advice. I have a 300 Win Mag but I think the double rifles are really special and would love to add it to the collection. Who do you typically hunt with out of Botswana?

I definitely understand that! And I love getting a special gun for a special occasion.

I’ve been a few times to Zimbabwe and South Africa but I’ve gotten to know several missionaries over the years and we now do a DIY hunt in the Kalahari Desert (Botswana). It’s the stuff of dreams and I hope your hunt exceeds your expectations!

I have been to both, and Dallas is far superior if that’s feasible fwiw. I do love Houston though!

I can be a severe hassle traveling to Africa with guns. It is doable if you fly straight to South Africa, Namibia, Botswana or Zambia. If you have to detour thru Europe it can get complicated.

I have hunted Africa 3 times. Once I took my guns and twice I just rented outfitters guns. If I ever go back I will be renting again. Contact your outfitters and see if they have suitable guns that you can rent and save yourself a lot of hassle and money. They may just have a double you can rent

I’m clueless but that seems like damn good advice. I can’t imagine bringing a gun through Europe now that you bring it up.

Thank you for the advice. Our trip has us flying IAH to Dubai, Dubai to Nairobi. We stay there for a week and then fly south.

Not sure if you can fly thru Dubai and Kenya with guns. Especially staying a week in Kenya. You better check out the legalities before you even consider it

I am definitely at the beginning stages of planning this trip and there will be a lot of due diligence on my part to figure out the logistics revolving around flying with a gun. I’ll probably have to rent a gun because of our itinerary but, I’m going to try nevertheless.

For a double you shroud go to Gordy & Sons in Houston. Although you can buy one off Cabelas as well.
