Dog training/Shock Collar

We've got a dog (Shepherd Mix) that is giving us issues with coming when called. He is around 18 months old. We got him from a Foster group when he was 6 months old. He's a great dog. Perfect personality for our house, gets along with every animal or person he encounters, and is just overall well behaved. The only issue were having is if he happens to get out of our yard, there's no getting him to listen when we call him back. He gets on a scent and just follows his nose wherever it takes him. He gets tunnel vision and just tunes us out. I've tried it all...clicking the leash, clapping, whistling, etc. And he just keeps on trucking until we can corner him in a yard. We've been through obedience training and he did great. I work with him regularly on a 50' leash and he listens perfectly when called. I just can't get him to listen without his leash/pinch collar on.
I'm trying to decide if we would benefit from either a wireless electric fence, or a remote controlled shock collar. Im not sure that the fence will stop this 100lb goober when he takes off. I'm wondering if the remote shock collar will be a good way to snap him out of his trance when hes not listening.
Any input from those with experience with either product will be great...or if you have other training ideas please feel free to chime in.

100% sure shock collar is the way to go

My hound was the same way. I think I lit her arse up one time when she was zoned out, after I gave the warning beep. Now, if she doesn't listen, I'll just make it beep and she hauls arse right back to my side.

I highly suggest u get a shock/vibrate/beep collar. I bought one from Amazon and love it. I've only shocked my dog a couple of times. You can set it on beep, vibrate, or beep. They learn very quickly. You can also set shock setting (1-100).

First YOU do not know the breed period. If he is a good dog and otherwise listens to you you close quarters but not off leash that pet has some hound in it. Shock collar will not fix a hound on off leash traning. I shock collar will not work on any dog who does not already know and respond to the command

I'm not sure about breed, but the vibrate on the collar I have scares the dog enough that it get my dogs attention

Thanks for the quick feedback guys. I will look into the remote collars.
Cracker you're absolutely right I'm not 100% sure of what all he has in him. He was advertised as Malinois/Great Pyrenees mix and he definitely favors both but I don't believe DNA testing was ever done. He does have the double-due claw like a pyrenees but otherwise looks just like a Shepherd. Everything that I've read about the Pyrenees says that they are roamers by nature...which has proven to be true.
Here's a pic of him.

I have the same one linked except mine has 2 collars with one remote. It's been about 2 weeks since using it and have only had to shock them each once. They would go crazy when we had company. I only use it as a training tool and don't keep them on. I hope it works in your situation.

Have a dog that would not stay out the streets. If we are outside with her, she will obey. But if let out at night by herself, she would roam. Bought a collar and shocked myself to see how bad it was before I hit her. shite lit me up! Does not feel good at all. Hit her once at a lower level than I hit myself and she looked like she was fighting an invisible cat for a second or two. She will not leave the yard with that collar on. With out it and she gone.

Tiger2... is this a remote shock collar or a fence type?
