I will be that guy. I often hear it said that I shot this or that because I ‘needed’ the meat. Trust me I used to be that guy. I changed that way of thinking years ago and for me it has helped me better manage the little property I have. I understand everybody’s situation is different but in today’s day and time if you can afford to hunt then you can afford to buy some ground meat or chicken. I also understand that it is a preference for deer meat, but again that is not a need it’s a want. Since I changed my approach I have passed on a lot of good young bucks that I would have otherwise shot and now I routinely see and shoot 130” or bigger bucks every year.

It’s important to some people to feed their families primarily on wild game and home grown fruits and vegetables.

How about you manage your land and your freezer the way you want to and let everyone else do the same.

This world would be a lot better place if people learned how to mind their own damn business.

Nowhere in my post did I say everybody had to take the same approach that I did, I was just merely stating my results of changing my approach. Kill’em and grill’em if you so choose.

I'll bite.
Don't need the meat but do I do love Venison. I shoot what's legal and within the rules of our lease. I have two in the freezer so far and hoping for two more. Just me and the wife.

No one “needs” meat. Rice and beans are much cheaper.

That said I eat the shite out of meat.

I like to cook venison, so I keep my freezer stocked.

When the stock runs low, I “need” to restock because I “want” more

Eta: that’s still no excuse for an ‘it’s brown it’s down’ approach. You can can stock the freezer without damaging the herd

Not a matter of need. I like the taste of deer and wild hog. If I had my choice of meat, I’ll take a doe every time though.

I find it funny that I share how I changed my approach to managing my land and in no way implied that everybody else follow suit and what I get is down votes and negativity. So much for us hunters being a brotherhood.

I really don’t care, but you started with this
quote:

I will be that guy.
and now seem surprised at the results so far

I enjoy making deer sausage each year. The kids keep us stocked up on venison and fish. We don’t hunt because we need the meat but we enjoy it and it is plentiful.

My family likes deer sausage better than store bought.

I need to keep my family happy.

I need the deer meat.

Come on now, lets be honest. You had a little message.

I agree with you for the most part. I dont hunt to eat, I hunt because I like it and am forced to eat venison in lieu of much tastier beef because I will not waste the animal.

So I have it processed with 50% pork to make sure it is palatable to my family.

I dont think you deserve all the shite you are and will get, but it was predictable.

I use old hunting clothes and hunt mostly public land. Live 35 minutes no matter where I hunt. I don't bait. My hunting cost is gas and hunting license. As someone who buys food for a family of 6, I can assure you it's cheaper than the grocery store, especially if you quarter it out yourself, much cheaper, not even close.

I spend a sizable amount of money every year just for the opportunity to hunt these animals.

If I kill a doe or two early then I will let most bucks walk and wait for a mature one.

If it’s late season and I haven’t killed anything yet you can count on me taking a legal buck no matter the age.

No I don’t need the meat but I like it and it cost too much to go a season and shoot nothing.

I have shot one buck over the last 9 years. Everything else has been a doe because I actually do it for the meat.

Anyone saying they harvest a buck for the meat is bull shitting you.

Hell, I don't even want the meat. I just process it out of responsibility.

Maybe people mean they need the meat because they don’t have any more deer meat in the freezer. Not that they need it to survive.
