Disturbing Wildlife

Forgot to mention in my 2024 Snake Extravaganza thread…the very first snake - the rat snake - cost us $230 each on federal misdemeanor charges. Apparently in a national park, picking up a snake is “disturbing wildlife”. I’ve been catching snakes at Jean Lafitte for almost 40 years and have never been told anything. No signs posted other than “Don’t feed the gators”.

Seriously though, I'd try to fight it. I'd try to show that y'all are researching them for educational purposes and material. I've learned more about snakes from you guys than anything the government has ever taught me.

Yeah literally we took the rat snake off a branch, filmed an educational video about how to identify, relative level of danger, etc. and put it back on the same branch.

Then, he'd get some other fine for failure to apply for some other bureaucratic permit. Can't fight city hall.

Of course not, they want you to find it for yourself buried deep on their web page.

All snakes are protected. It is unlawful to handle or molest snakes in the Preserve. Snakes should not be captured: they are relatively delicate and internal injuries can result from improper handling. Besides, most bites occur during capture and handling.
It's a crock. NPS Website - under the snake section

Do you expect to be able to pick up other animals in a NP?

Must have been related to "Officer Doofy" from the first "Scary Movie"......or maybe the idiots who write speeding tickets in Golden Meadow for going 2 mph over the limit.

Yes, if I see a frog or a lizard I don’t see the harm in picking it up.

How would you like it if animals came into your home and picked YOU up and checked YOUR genitals to determine your sex?
Thats what I thought.

I have a growing feeling some may be offended if the animal just assumed sex based on genitalia.

Imagine getting mauled close to death by a grizzly and then the little punk warden tacks on a fine. After all, you apparently frightened the bear into attacking you.

No, his case would be petting the Griz.
