Wake up this morning to water in the cabinet below my sink. Checked all the pipes and connections and they are dry as a bone. Only thing that is wet is the bottom of the disposal. I'm assuming that means it's done? If not, then ideas on how to fix it would be appreciated.
If it is done are there any particular brands or types to get or stay away from? Are they pretty much all the same with regards to fittings etc?

The disposal is pretty easy to replace. It's like a quarter turn install on the bottom of the sink and a threaded fitting to the plumbing. Check to see if the disposal it tight to the sink or if the leak is coming from the gasket between the sink and the disposal. How old is the disposal?

You checked the connection at the hose/pipe from the disposal? Could be a small crack or bad gasket there that is leaking down the side of the disposal.

I would fill a few inches of water in the sink and run the disposal while watching it to see exactly where it is leaking.

Pretty much universal. Some come with cords so you don't have to hardwire.

This

It could be that the plumber's putty is bad on the disposal drain adapter. It could be you just need to reinstall the drain on the bottom of the sink with better caulk/putty or replace the gasket on the disposal before you go buy another disposal.

Also check to make sure the hose clamp connecting the dishwasher to the disposal is tight (if set up this way).

Mother-in-law has a sow leak on hers, and it turned out to be a small crack in the disposal housing. I roughed it up with some sandpaper, JB Welded it, and it's back in operation.

It could be those things, but it's likely the inside of the disposal cracked and they don't sell parts for them at least they don't the lower end ones.

You basically get what you pay for, the cheaper ones are all plastic so they break after 5 years or so. You have to get to about the $200 ones to get metal internal parts and a metal lining of the interior. My wife left a fork in one one time that was jammed into the wall by the disposal that broke it, a metal inside would of prevented this. The more expensive you go the quieter they get also, that's about it.

Yep. That's the first place I checked. Dry around the whole disposal with the exception of the bottom where the cord comes in and the reset switch is. I'm going to check the bucket I have down there for lunch and see if water is anywhere

I have no idea how old it is though. House was built in 99'. So it may be damn near 20yrs old. Which I would assume would be a good run for a disposal?

I recently resealed the sink to the granite as there was a gap forming at the back end. I found water under the sink which is what made me not put it off anymore b/c I assumed water was going through the crack and staying at the bottom of the cabinet. Looking back, this thing was more than likely the culprit of the first water I found that I thought was caused by gap b/w the sink and granite. The sink is finished and sealed with the correct silicone and has no water leaking around it at all.

I had the same issue happen twice in 18 months with disposals, they just started to leak from the middle of the bottom. Something on the inside broke, i tried my best to figure out a repair but they are no parts or service to be found. They can last awhile if used properly though.

I've replaced disposals and it is nothing complicated or difficult. But from what you've described, it sounds like the leak could be at the bottom of your sink, where the drain attaches to the hole in the basin. If that's the case, it's an unusual place for a leak. The disposal drain, the part that you see from the top, should have a putty ring between the metal and the basin, and the thing should be tightened down by a threaded connection. Maybe reset the disposal, if that is the location of the leak. If it is anything internal, go get yourself another disposal and change it out.

Check youtube there are one or two decent videos of guys taking it apart and trying to fix it. For $99 and free shipping I just replaced mine. Got same model and all the connections were int he same place. Piece of cake.

Looking at your second description more closely, it sounds like something in the disposal housing at the bottom. Probably need to replace.

Badger is a great brand. Lowes and plumbing supplies have them.

If it is leaking from the bottom and not dripping down from top, need to be replaced.

That's what I was saying about the plumber's putty at the sink drain adapter, try the cheap fix first before you go buy another disposal. Just depends on where the water's coming from if you can find it.
