Deer Rifle with Scope

My son wants one.
I'm not a hunter, but cousin said to buy him a Remington 700 BDL with a Bushnell scope.
I'd like to hear other deer hunters' recommendations?

I just ordered a Tikka T3 Stainless in 270 caliber. I will buy a Leupold VX3 to put on it.
How old is your son? You can't go wrong with the 700 BDL series by Remington.

WIth that in mind on the budget I would look at a Tikka 30-.06, or 7mm mag with Leupold, Meopta, Konus 3x9x50.
That will allow your son to take deer and if he ever decides to go west on a larger species will have plenty of gun to take them with.

Winchester Model 70 in .30-06 throw a Zeiss 3x9 on it and it'll last him a lifetime.

What has been mentioned are all good options. Watch for the low end bushnell's they aren't quality. Nikon, Burris, leupold are also good alternatives. Probably something close to a 3x9x40

Tikka, Remington, savage, are all great guns and just personal preference,I have browning, tikka and remmington and tikka is my favorite by far, 30-06 and .270 are both great deer calibers and just splitting hairs between them i would stick with one of those but there plenty others to choose from that will all do the job and some smart arse will say one is better
As for the scope, to me this is the most important part and it really depends on your budget , but Leupold, zeiss, meopta, are all great, but look through and give some thought to buying a vortex viper, in my opinion the best glass for the money

I generally agree with this, but you can buy an awful good vortex for $650 ad I just put it on My $800 tikka and could not be happier, actually like it better than my Swarovski

lol spend more on the scope than gun.. this tickles me everytime i hear this. If you are going on elk hunts, or hunting all over the us and canada sure. But i have hunted my whole life, killed plenty of deer, and perfectly happy with a $150-$200 nikon prostaff "and i own a zeiss and vx3. I hunt mississippi, ohio, kentucky, and louisiana and have not needed a $800 scope 
for the regular every day hunter you do not need that. I am noy knocking a $800 scope or a $1000 scope, they have great eye relief and draw in good light at dark, but for the avg hunter... it isnt needed.
as far as rifle goes, get a 270, 30-06, or 308. Ammo easially found and will kill any big game in north america. Browning, savage, remington, winchester, tikka all make good rifles.

Also the ruger all American rifle is worth looking into, I have not shot or handled one but been getting good reviews for an entry. Level rifle

We really need a budget. Without one I would recommend a Remington model 700 or savage for a lower end rifle or a budget of around $750 to $900. They will run you $379 to $500. The model 700 is $379 at academy or Walmart. I would put a Nikon Monarch scope on it, something in the 12 power range. If your budget is closer to $1,300 I would recommend a Tilka T3 stainless and Zeiss conquest. I would recommend a Sako Grey Wolf with a Swarovski Z5 if you have OB baller status

I can shoot just as good a 300 yards with my Nikon Monarch as I can with my Meopta in broad daylight. It's about that 10 minutes of extra light it gives on that 100 yard shot at dusk.

Not being a hunter I really do not have a point of reference, but from what I've read above I am thinking in the neighborhood of two grand total package - give or take.
What if my son decides he doesn't like deer hunting? Then I am going to want something with high resale value.
