My son is going deer hunting for the first time, and I want to get him a jacket. I've never deer hunted so I don't know what to look for or what brands are best.

Any help appreciated. I think they will be hunting from a stand.

Artic Shield makes a good jacket. Whats your price range and his size? LINK

He'd wear a large. Under $200 is my range. Birthday present.

Forgive my ignorance, but the difference in camo and fluorescent orange is pretty pronounced. There must be a reason for both.

Anything really. A great idea is a jacket with a removable liner for those not so frigid days

During any active deer gun season (and just as an optional safety precaution other times of the year), hunters orange is required to be worn by deer hunters. Deer see it as a grey color. Typically, people wear camo jackets and underneath layers with just a hunter's orange vest and/or cap (depending on the local regulations) on top. That way you're not always wearing orange in case you end up also using that jacket for small game or waterfowl hunting.

In Georgia you must have 200 square inches of orange on at all time while hunting during rifle season. I would get the camo jacket and buy the orange safety vest because sometimes when it isn't cold, you won't wear the jacket but will have to wear the vest. Academy has a pretty good selection as does cabelas, bass pro and places like that. I would tell you to get a set of bibs and matching jacket, and depending on what you buy, $200 should get both. I am assume you are in Georgia by your username so you don't really need arctic gear.

Great info guys. He will actually be hunting in Alabama. If anyone knows the rules there, I'd appreciate it. I will look it up though.

I have never hunted in Alabama, but I would assume the rules are the same, but you might want to look at the rules for an out of state hunting permit and the requirements for that.

Glad your son is getting to go hunting.
Safety First - always use orange. I hunt private land and still have on orange vest and flashlight on - even during daylight.
Jacket? If he is hunting out of an enclosed stand, don't sweat it, he probably has a jacket he could already wear, anything dark. Personally I almost never wear a bulky jacket, I prefer to layer cold gear.
Camo - some are better than others, but I mix them all the time. there are some for piney woods, some for marsh grass, some for oak flats late season, early season... I don't think there is one best one and the deer cant' see you in the stand anyway.
If he will be exposed, we need more detail to really help with specifics, types of woods, temperatures, etc...

I like parkas, Cabelas has a late season Parka with 200g thinsulate in the 150 range. linky thing

I got him that for when he goes quail hunting.

Thanks guys for all the help.

Alabama has a 144 sq. inch requirement OR a cap. Not required in the stand but have to wear it while walking to the stand. Just an FYI.
Also have to take a hunting class to get the license. Pretty standard from what I can tell.

Alabama requires a minimum of 144 square inches of hunter orange or either a full-size hunter orange hat or cap.

LINK

One thing of note, it has to be solid, with a logo allowed. No "Blaze Camo" allowed.

I use a orange hat or toboggan walking to my stand, and I keep an orange vest in my bag. I wear it if I am walking around during the day or tracking a deer.

Chris, can you help me interpret the season laws?

Alabama Deer Season Map

It looks like December 19-21 is good for most deer except antlered bucks by "stalking." I don't see a law for stand hunting.

"Stalking" is any method not using dogs. Tree stand or ground blind = stalking

Private land in Zone A (north part).

The map makes no sense to me for "antlered bucks"

Wait, I see what it means now. Looks like he will be ok anywhere in the state on his dates.

Private land in Zone A - you can shoot anything that doesnt have spots from Nov21 - Jan 31.

One deer per day / possesion. Make sure he has a harvest record and a pen on him at all times. Any antlered buck is suppose to be recorded before you move it.
