Taking a trip this fall with a buddy we are going back to his home state of North Dakota.. We gona shoot some pheasant and ducks on his buddy's farm.. What is the rules about transporting guns on a plane? Should I just UPS it to his parents house?

And what about bringing back a pheasant to mount? Can I carry that on in my book sack?

Pretty sure you will have to freeze and ship that pheasant back or have it mounted up there.

You can check guns on the flight, but its probably just as cheap and a lot less hassle to ship them up (through UPS of course)

Nope. It better be mounted before you leave if its in your book sack.

You're not supposed to ship firearms to someone in another state. It's supposed to go to an FFL. There is that to consider.

Traveling with a gun isn't a hassle, provided you have a lockable case already. You'll also need a non TSA lock. Other than that, they just inspect it and send it on down the line. Doesn't take 2 extra minutes.

I would probably get it mounted up there and ship it back Herr once it's completed. They will probably do a better job anyway, taxidermist here probably don't get near the number of Pheasants guys up there do.

There are specific rules for doing both things.

As Dave said you can travel with your gun as long as it's unloaded and you have an approved case. On a side note if you like you can also travel with I believe 10 lbs of ammo which in case of a shotgun is 4 boxes.

As far as traveling with game that isn't a big deal either, especially since you are not leaving the country. Buy an ice chest before leaving and you can transport your possession limit in waterfowl however they MUST have at least a wing on them still, so if you breast them keep one wing attached. Coming from Canada there is a form you must fill out correctly, I am 99% sure it's a 3-177, I DONT THINK (not sure) that this is required to transport waterfowl across state lines but check with the USFWS first.

All that being said it's pretty easy to transport gun and birds on a plane. If you still live in Washington Parish I'll be happy to meet you for a beer one day and go over some of it if it helps.

I thought you could ship to yourself without an FFL involved?

Get a good case, use your own locks and notify the baggage claim you have a weapon when you check your bag.

Ammo is cheaper to buy when you get there less hassle and one less case to deal with.

Birds will need to be frozen. I just put them in my checked bag inside a garbage bag so incase of any sweating.

Trophy birds will need to mounted and shipped down to you.

I hunt in Kansas and SD often and I have never had an issue.

I can't say enough how important a good case is, I use a pelican. I went cheap the first couple of times and my cases did not fair well. If I would have spent the money on a pelican first it would have been cheaper.

Looks like you are right, I stand corrected.

I fly every week with my side arm. I have a lock box that goes in my checked suit case. I fly Southwest and it is one form to fill out.

I just flew back from Point Clear, AL and also checked a large cooler of snapper. It was frozen. From ND I would put everything on dry ice (5 pound limit on SW) in a cooler with the vent open.

It's really easy.

I flew back from canada last year with a nice speckled belly i wanted to mount. Froze the bird the night before the flight, and carried it on the plane in a soft ice chest with some ice packs. No issues whatsoever. Id reccommend carrying it on instead of checking. If they lose your luggage, the ice could melt and that bird could spoil by the time they get it to you. That is if it ever gets to you.
