Does anyone have any first hand knowledge of what CWD has done to the deer herd in the MS delta or NE part of the state of MS where it was first found seems like 3-5 years ago?

I really don't know the answer? Seems like it's a matter of time until it is everywhere. So if that's the case what was done? Did the state shoot multiple deer in the hot zones to sample? Did a lot of deer die? What does the deer herd look like in those areas today compared to pre CWD? Anyone know any of the answers?

For whitetails, the hottest CWD zone is southern Wisconsin. They have some counties where they have thousands of CWD deer per year.
The Mississippi zone north of Vicksburg had one case for the first two years. This hunting season, they picked up two more. All of these have been north of Vicksburg. Very slow moving in this area.
The new Tensas case is 27 miles and a huge river away from these Mississippi cases.
North Mississippi is a different situation. West Tennessee is a hot zone. Case numbers in the 100s. Spreading south into Mississippi and East. It’s almost like it’s a more aggressive strain.
There’s only been one area where there was a case and it disappeared. I believe that was in Pennsylvania.

Mature buck numbers have decreased in Southern Wisconsin were rates are the highest which is to be expected due to mature bucks being the most affected by CWD. Overall the population has decreased as well but it is tough to say it is CWD because of the drastic herd thinning they did.

Baw, more justification for rolling that 2.5y/o basket rack 8-pt. No longer is "If I don't killeem the neighbor will" the #1 reason.

We hunt in this original zone in the Delta. It's been a short amount of time, but we actually saw/killed more/better deer this year than past, BUT that has more to do with flooding.

The 1st cases were in Fayette County TN if I remember right. MY house is only a few hundred yards from Fayette Cnty.

The herd around here is still very large. Deer are everywhere up here. I'd venture to say way too many.
Took my son to trap practice y-day and on the way home there were deer in pretty much every field you saw, anywhere from 3 up to 30.

North MS is the same way.

So this CWD thing isn't a big deal? Why is LDWF shitting a brick?

CWD isn’t a big deal until it makes the jump to humans.

Bbvdd, are you in the area where you can now kill five bucks? Do y’all still eat your kill? Do you get deer tested?

I'm curious to see how the spread happens. I imagine that it will spread faster through Pine plantions where there isnt as many food sources vs AG fields and hardwoods.

So is that the primary concern (of LDWF) or is it the deer herd?

It's 4 bucks in north MS, no restrictions on antler size.

Not sure about TN. Don't hunt in TN.

Thank you all for the replies. The biologist on our place tells us there are two cases south of Vicksburg very close to where we hunt that haven't gone public yet. I am hoping that's urban legend but even if it is I suspect its just a matter of time.

Wondering what our hunting will look like ten years from now. A LOT of hard work has been done to make our place better and the deer herd better. The thought of loosing a lot of it to CWD over the coming years really sucks.
