Did a search so sorry if this is old discussion, and I'm new here so I haven't been around to read previous posts. I was wondering if anybody on the board was involved with any competitive shooting. How did you get involved, What competition do you shoot and what gun do you compete with. I'm looking to shoot single stack stack 9mm to get started, and really any advise would be appreciated

Funny thing I found TD because I was searching for some info on 1911s and a plethora of threads popped up. Lot of the threads referenced him, so I look forward to hearing his opinion..

We've never really discussed it over here very much. The guys over at bayoushooter.com are very big into this type of thing. You can find a lot of info there.

I have been shooting USPSA since 1997. Started shooting with a local gun shop doing some informal matches where ever we could. I knew Donnie Miculek as the local game warden and he told us about these type of matches. Went to the first one and was hooked. I have shot the nationals and the pan american championship a couple of times. made GM in open, limited and limited 10 and won a few state championships.
I shoot a brazos custom open (38 super) and limited (40s&w)

is the main website to get your local match dates and times.
If you are looking to shoot single stack you can go with .45 to make major. If you have anyother questions you can email me at:

I think you mean IPSC
Also USPSA is a subsidiary or IPSC, you must become a member to shoot in events and they have them all over. I've gone as far as Arizona to shoot. It's mostly real life scenarios that you might find yourself in. I haven't competed competively in 8 years though, it's awesome! Good luck with your shooting.
I shoot a STI Trubor in .38 Super
I'm going out with the wife tonight so I will reply with any information about questions you might have ASAP

There's also a quasi-IDPA group that shoots on the first Saturday of the month at the Tangipahoa SO range.
Slightly different from USPSA in that you draw from concealment and use slightly different targets//scoring system.
Like USPSA, there are divisions/categories for different types of weapons (revolvers compete against revolvers, 1911 vs. 1911's, etc)

Thanks for the info. Should I abandon the single stack idea for now and learn in the production classification? I have a fnp 40 that im fairly comfortable with, that's sufficient right? I'm thinking I need more than 3 mags with the ten round limit is that also correct ?

production would be the best route. most people use 9mm but .40 will work. you will want at least 5-6 mags for production.

If your going production I would go 9mm just on cost alone

Thanks for the help. It should be ok to stick with the sti spartan 9mm even with the 9 round mag?

you will be at a little disadvantage with one less round but it will work.
