Have a charter booked for July 6th with Captain Tom Adams with Mexico beach charters.

Apparently a deck hand is not standard and would be an additional 15% charge. We already made arrangements to tip a deckhand so 15% is no issue.

Question is, with 4 of us on the boat do we need a deckhand?

If not should we still tip the captain?

First charter so if this is ignorant then I apologize. Thanks in advance!

You will need/want a deck hand if you are trolling.

I would hire one just for piece of mind. You may know how to do it, but if it was me, I'd rather not have to worry about it and just have a good time.

I'm certainty the most experienced of thethe folks going and I don't feel comfortable doing everything so that answers that.

8 hour with 4 guys. Any other tips.

His rate is $115 an hour so what's fair for tip to deckhand?

Was thinking $100-150

sounds to me like you are going on a bottom fishing trip for snapper, amberjack, etc....if that is the case, the deckhand basically just baits your hooks and takes fish off (both of which can be kind of difficult for folks who aren't used to doing that type of thing)....if you have more than a person or two on the boat that is not an experienced fisherman, then I would probably get a deckhand to help out...

I would tip 15 - 20% of total cost, as long as they work their asses off...

also, you need to be very clear on what is included in your trip, as some rates include fuel, ice and fish cleaning and some don't....you just need to know up front, what is included since some of these costs can be substantial....

We will mostly be bottom fishing. So unless something crazy happens and we limit out quickly we probably won't do any trolling.

If no deckhand is it still customary to tip the captain?

Thanks for all the responses.

If you are basically doing most of the deck hand work and you are cleaning you own fish....Id tip him, just not as much.... 10%ish. If he has you a limit and back at the dock so you can enjoy the rest of the day with your buddies...hes done his job and earned that tip.

Never fished offshore in Florida, but here bottom fishing sometimes can really require a deckhand. When you have 4 to 6 lines out stuff can start getting crazy pretty quick, especially if the other guys don't have any experience.

My advice would be to get the deckhand, if you're paying for a charter, how much work do you really want to do anyway? I know I am exhausted after a day offshore here, so if I pay for a charter I don't want to do jack shite.

As far as tip with a deckhand, tip him 15% and if he is a real bad arse then give him 20, most of the time the only way they get paid is via the tip. If you don't have one, then you should still tip the captain just not as much.
