I've heard you need to make sure he does the work and not his son.

Not recently but back in the day (10-15 years ago) I did. I felt like he was honest and did good work. I haven't heard anything about him lately though.

Well crap. Should have started this thread Monday morning

Brought a 50hp Merc to be serviced. Just needed carbs cleaned, 2 new batteries, whole new water pump and assembly. Got a bill for $800

Not sure. he called me this morning saying it was ready. I did like that when I brought the boat yesterday morning he wouldn't let me leave until we did a compression check. He seemed honest and very friendly. The motor has sat up a while and wasn't in the best running condition. I told him I wanted it worry free. If that what I get then the money is well spent

Yep. If he put two good marine batteries in, that alone with tax could be $250 or more.

He was one of the more athletic QB's I've ever seen. Nice to see he has a 2nd profession.

That is in the ballpark (avg out price)
2 batteries $250 avg
Carb kits 2.if 3 cylinder then more - $60 to $80 ($30 to $40 each kit)
Water pump kit $60 to $100 on avg

Just avg out parts cost $410

The rest is labor, shop fee ( shop supplies , misc fee, taxes
Let's say shop rate $80 x4= $320
$800 not way off for what he did
