Chainsaw bar replacement question about length

The tip of mine got damaged last weekend, and I need a replacement. It is just a basic 18 inch from Sears. What are the pros/cons of replacing it with a 16 or 20 inch bar? From what I've seen, a 16 will make it seem like it has more power but not as much length if I needed to cut larger limbs/trunk of a tree, and a 20 will give a little bit more in length but may compromise power. Or I could just get another 18 inch bar and call it done. As cheap as they are I may just get a couple of them and swap out as needed, but it can be a PITA to get the tension just right and I wouldn't want to be changing it in the middle of cutting.

Between the difference of 2" I'd say the chain you run would have more overall impact. For such a light duty saw I don't see any advantages from deviating from the OEM bar.

Yeah, I mainly bought it last summer because a huge tree fell in the backyard and I needed to cut it up and haul it off. I just bought an 18 inch because it seemed like the most popular for your typical homeowner. I was cutting down a dead tree back there last weekend and was thinking a slightly longer bar would have been nice. But didn't want to give up much power since it is a small saw anyways.

Just for a minute. Then I lost wood.

I'd probably try a different chain type like a skip tooth. It's just a matter if it's worth the extra effort and money into something like that to you. Maybe even seeing if Stihl makes a chain that will fit.
