Cautionary tale for all hikers

The beauty and ruggedness of the wilderness is what draws many of us there. A sense of normalcy being in the back country develops and we never even question what we are doing and why we are there. We often forget how dangerous it really can be.
A few friends of mine who had travelled to the Linville Gorge area of WNC many, many times, experienced a terrible accident. They were hiking to the Sphinx area, which is a particularly technical and dangerous area with huge drop offs and very tight, steep terrain. While scrambling up a rocky section, a friend of mine lost his grip and fell 200 ft down the mountain. It was described to me as happening in a matter of seconds. He was over the side, rolling like a log down the mountain, until he stopped an estimated 200 feet down. Six hours and two black hawk helicopter rescues later, he survived but will require surgery.
I know I am guilty of becoming complacent in the woods and taking unnecessary risk. I wanted to share this with other backpackers here to remind myself and others to always be prepared when going into the back country. Mother Nature is unrelenting in her beauty but, will kill or permanently change your life forever if you let her.

Good post.
I slipped and fell on State Game Lands 95 in PA. fell down a 12 foot rock face and was somehow uninjured. it happens quick. If I would have gotten hurt with no cell reception I would have had to crawl out

These guys are very experienced hikers and are considered "gorge rats." A name given to people who hike that area often.
Mother Nature does not discriminate.
How'd you get out?

The rescue video was good. Dude is lucky to be alive. Hope he's doing better.

I am thankful Shug was there to document. If I fall down a mountain, I hope it happens on a hike with Shug if anyone can keep you distracted and in good spirits after something like that, it's him. The guy is a national treasure and a hell of a lot of fun to hike with.
As far as I've heard, he is doing fine.

I've fished Linville river - one can get into trouble there if not careful.

Lesson of the day:
Don't walk in the mountains

Is it acceptable to post a pic of a guy who got his face chewed off by a bear?

I had a frat brother, who, after graduating with an engineering degree, joined the Navy and went to flight school, and became a fighter jet pilot.
He was stationed in California and took up rock climbing as a hobby. He had equipment failure on a climb and fell to his death.
What a waste, but he thrived on living a thrilling life.

Guy slipped on a snow field on Mt. Juneau today and fell a couple hundred feet. He's ok, probably broke his shoulder. Every year we lose several people on the trails, some within sight of downtown.

When did this happen?

Linville Gorge is some of the diciest shite you can get yourself into in this region, IMO.

I just walked around the face until I found a spot that was about 6 feet high and climbed back up. Pretty scary though. Being injured alone would suck royally

Yes. That's them. Thanks for linking the video.

You'd be right. Multiple rescues occur every year there.

My first aid kit has grown since this accident. Had he been alone, he wouldn't have survived. They pulled an older fellow from the base of a waterfall not too long before this accident in the same area. He had slipped and fallen while hiking alone. Other hikers stumbled upon his body.

Amazing. Cool that he had the gopro rolling.

I almost took a similar fall while on a black diamond mountain bike trail. I have very little biking experience. So fricking stupid.
