Back in south Florida, but stopped for a bit in north Florida to break up the drive. Hit a spot and while waiting for a friend to show up to meet us, just a few steps out of the parking area I ran into my first ever coral - a very nice sized one!

I’ve always wondered what I would do if I came across one - I mean…how could you NOT pick it up, right?

Just a gorgeous snake! Handling it felt surreal.

Ended up being my best herping day ever. Also got a Dusky pygmy rattler, then drove down south the get a scarlet snake, a Florida cotton, Florida banded water snake, 3 brown water snakes, and a striped crawfish snake (another lifer).

So is this where we can see the "red and yellow kills a fellow, red and black friendly jack" saying come into play?

That is a good sized coral. Only one I have seen was the size of a pencil and that was in the Sabine National Forest. Very pretty looking snake and the size of its mouth isn't exactly conducive to a bit on a human. But lord knows I didn't want to tempt it anywhere near what you do.

Do you get an adrenaline rush from handling these snakes?

For sure.

That’s why I carry those little blue pills on my snake adventures.

It was flighty at first - when I spotted it at my feet it was already on the go. Was able to hook & tail it to walk it the few steps back to the open parking area, and after it crawled around a bit it settled down some. When I ditched the stick and started handling it, a few times the bitey end came back up in my direction but never in an aggressive manner - more focused on just trying to get away. I think I probably could have straight up free handled it without getting bit…but I damn sure wasn’t going to find out.

I briefly attempted to tail the pygmy, but that lil fricker was having none of it.

When I was in the eighth grade, I found one of these beautiful candy cane specials out in the tree line beyond the football field during P.E. while hiding from the coaches to avoid sweating like a pig. I put it in my underwear so that I could freak out the other kids when we got back into the locker room. Needless to say, it bit me several times.

I never experienced any ill affect at all, but I noticed that the good looking girls started to treat me like a stud from that point on. They always asked to see what I had in my pants.

I've seen those rascals several times while scouting the woods in the early spring. When I see them I bow my head and thank them.

So now that you have caught one of the deadliest snakes in the world, is there one snake you will not catch?

Beautiful coral snake. I've been fortunate enough to see a few of them in Central Texas growing up. I was digging for arrowheads at my grandpas ranch and found one, just sat there and watched him for about 30 minutes, he caught a couple crickets in that time. It's the one venomous snake that gets an automatic pass and relocation if found around my house.

Damn, awesome!

I've been looking for corals and duskys pretty hard but I still have never seen either.

Care to share the general area?

Also, do you just walk around trails/the woods and use your eyes/ears? Or do you flip a bunch of rocks and timber?
