I remember asking Josey why he did such a dumb thing. They were hog hunting on horses when dogs hemmed one up in couple feet of backwater. Instead of shooting, off the horse and into the water he went with his Jim Bowie size knife.

I sure did like Josey's stories, especially the one about him killing the hog with a knife, even though he had a gun right by his side.

That was during his Skinit days circa 2004 or so. He bought a horse for a short period of time and took it big hunting a few times. JD never missed a meal growing up and often shopped in the husky department, but he was as soft as a big teddy bear. He avoided confrontation like the plague and just wanted everyone to enjoy themselves. Hell, we were at a different camp one night years ago and didn't turn the heat one when we came in drunk. I woke up to go hunting in his spoon after another hunting companion accused us of being queers. Thank god that was before iPhones!! He did throw a few haymakers in the beak of his horse on a hog hunt one time for stopping when the action was getting good, however. It was like a grizzly bear slapping a horse and he cursed that horse the rest of the weekend.

That horse was sold a few days later, btw.

I see. Horses might've spooked, plus shooting off the back of a horse is a chancy deal, unless you're John Wayne.

It's a good story, though.

That horse wasn't meant for hunting, evidently.

Here is another gret pic 4. I was mowing that plot last weekend and said some prayers and was planning a youth hunt for EJW jr. Perhaps you can come and you and he could hunt that stand together........although you know my vote will be to bring my sons 7mm-08 instead of the .243

Great thread for a great man!
