This is a spin-off from my trail-cutting thread and needing a 'rope rail' to help on steeper sections until I have a chance to cut proper steps.

i don't want to go so over-the-top (1 1/2" marine grade rope) due to expense because i'll need several hundred feet..but don't want it too small to 'feel good' when gripping.

what are your thoughts about:

1. Nylon vs Manila? I see manila shrinks when wet but i like the more natural look and its much cheaper. the evans cordage manila seems like a good quality rope that won't break the bank and feels good for gripping.

2. 1/2", 5/8" or 3/4"? I was originally going with 3/4" but now i'm not so sure. i'm thinking 1/2" is just too small. is 5/8" an adequate size for gripping or should i just stick with 3/4"?

3. how do you recommend i tie it off? i like this look below. he actually runs a screw in at the start of the rope that disappears into the twine for a very clean finished look. obviously i wont have that much slack in my rope railing and i wont be using rope that thick (thats 1 1/2" rope)

Check out the yellow poly on the roll at Lowes. It is I think 3/4" and has a very high load limit compared to its low cost. I believe it was around 75 cents per foot with a 1000lb load limit. I bought several rolls to secure my floating dock when a storm broke it loose. Used leftovers for swings for the kids. If you feel its too small in diameter, knot it every few feet for better grip.

you could tie it off with a bowline knot if you want it to come back off easily, or just wrap it around the tree a few times and tie it off with a taught line hitch or a couple half hitches if you want to take slack out.

Manila would most definitely not be my choice, it rots after very few wet dry cycles and I would hate the rope to part whilst I was pulling myself up a hill.

As to size, the bigger the better in this application, less stress on the hands, tie it to a tree on the top with a 1/2 hitch, pull to next anchor point and tie another half hitch, repeat as necessary.

Looks like you can get 3/4" polypro rope at Home Depot for less than $0.05/foot. That would be my choice.

Harbor Freight sells 1/4" welded zinc plated chain for $30 for a 35ft roll. With a 20% off coupon that's about $0.69/ft. You might spend a little more but after you pull it out and are done with it I would have a lot more use for a bunch of used chain than I would a bunch of used rope. Plus you don't have to worry about rope burn with a chain.

All of the knots you need

Amazon fan, I'd go with that yellow rope. I have used it for all kinds of things, and it holds up really well in the elements

Buy this screw it into the trees with this and this and be done with it. It will be plenty strong enough for your purpose. When your done with it just unscrew them.

You want plastic rope. Won't go bad in the Louisiana Environment.

chain will be noisy too...especially if this is a trail used to make it up the hill for a deer hunt...

Id go 1/2 inch braided and def not buy from depot. Thats cheap chinese shite.

Order online from the marine stores, yea you get what ya paid for (New England Ropes)

Three strand twist will be a lot slicker when wet than braided

DON'T USE THAT! Sun breaks it down fast and you will be replacing it with in a year.

I used to have a few pieces of 20ft rigging rope that came off of boats that sat in the bed of my truck year round covered in mud. Gabriel hardware in ponchatoula used to sell them for like $5 a piece in pretty good shape. They lasted 5-10 years
