VX-3 RELATIVELY LOW PRICED, BUT GOOD QUALITY. ITS ALL YOU REALLY NEED FOR HUNT WHITETAIL

What rifle? Caliber? What kind of hunting?
I just got a Leupold VX-R 2-7x33 with the FireDot 4 reticle on eBay for $340 and absolutely love it. Highly recommend it. If not that, the VX-3 would be my second choice. Can't go wrong with either.
Stay away from the entry scopes. VX 2 is ok, but you get what you pay for.

This gone is not for me or my son.
Fin, what does this mean:
4.5x14x50
I see there are several options

what is the average distance of shot that you think your son will be taking. those numbers are the zoom range and last one being size of the scope... 40mm vs 50mm being bigger
Posted on 12/16/14 at 3:12 pm to Chad504boy
I am going to guess 75-100 yards is typical shot

The current Vx-2s are essentially the same as the vx-3s from a few years ago. I have a vx2 3-9x40 and have no complaints on clarity or anything about the scope.

why not 50mm over 40mm?
Posted on 12/16/14 at 3:27 pm to Chad504boy
I just don't believe you need a 50mm objective lens on a hunting rifle. You can mount a 40mm closer to the bore and it will still provide more than enough light and field of view to make most shots, even past last light... so I've been told.

This would be my choice.

I concur with DSD, Chicken. This is a really good balance. Keep in mind that Leupolds run up to $5k or so (maybe more).
If you know for a fact that the "long" shots will be shorter than average, then maybe try to save $100 and get the 2.5-8X36 - still a nice scope. Most people overbuy a centerfire rifle scope. Leupolds are already pretty pricey and, for the most part, make a variable focus scope optimized for every 25 yard increment, with the capacity to go a little closer or a little longer.
Their fixed focus scopes ain't cheap, either.

I'll just say look through a Vortex scope and Leupold scope side by side before a purchase
