Your plans for a fun weekend aren't going to work out. Seriously, it'll be hot, buggy, stuck fishing the beach, and you'll be dealing w some of the worst humanity has to offer camping around you at the state park. Your wife won't make it 24 hours, and you will have no positive memories to share later with your kids.
Seriously, come up with a Plan B.

I ain't staying in no tent!!!
I am staying at my uncle's camp with 3 or 4 other couples. We were there last year and it wasn't too bad once we got there. We fricked up and left Saturday morning and was stuck in all that traffic. We are headed down there Friday afternoon, so I will be drinking on the beach early instead of sitting in bumper to bumper traffic.

I was at the state park a few days ago and there were 2 warnings. One for high currents/ waves and another for dangerous marine life.

How's the crabbing/fishing on the beach early July? We have a camp rented the weekend after the 4th. It's probably gonna be packed

Give us an update when y'all get back. I'm interested to see how it turned out.

I camped out once at Fourchon Beach. From that experience I recommend that you bring a 3 foot wooden stake, a sledgehammer, and a coil of rope. Shortly before sunset, hammer the wooden stake into the ground, and cut a 3 foot length of rope and tie it securely to the stake. Tie the other end of the rope around your ankle.
Doing this will prevent the mosquitoes from picking you up and carrying you into the marsh where they will eat you alive.

It will be a memorble weekend, just keep a positive attitude and approach it as an adventure.
I know lots of people do this and catch crabs, but something never quite sat right with me splashing around in knee high dingy water surrounded by bloody chicken

Crabbing on Grand Isle, get two poles and tie a line between them every 3-5 tie a chicken neck on the line. Take a net and lift the chicken neck up so often

Only time I've had issues with sharks in surf is with fish on stringers.

Ive been in the water with the sharks, mostly black tips and sometimes bull sharks. Not usually a huge problem

Bring a 4 ft cast net...we've been catching 21-26 shrimp on the beach for three weeks now

Thanks for the advice. I'll get a cast net the closer I get down south. None to be found in W. Monroe. My sons & I will spend lots of time fishing from the beach. What advice can I get on bait, line, particular hooks, weights, etc... I'm a basic Bass fisherman.
