I have a few questions in the search for my 1911. I like the Colt Series 80 blued in all steel. Eventually id like to add a few things to it (stainless barrel/trigger, new grips) nothing crazy.
1. Where to start looking for one? or is it easier to order from colt's website. I live in thibodaux so i can go to BR or NOLA if need be Id like to keep the trips to a minimum but i would like to put my hands on one first.
2. What other options do i have in the $900-$1300 price range. The gun will be left at home/used at the range. I already have a CC pistol.
TIA

Colts are pretty hard to come by. You may wanna check GunBroker or other sites like that first.

I've actually seen a Series 80 in a pawn shop in New Orleans, but I doubt you'll find one that way.

$900 - $1300 will buy you a pretty decent 1911. I'm a fan of the Springfields, but you can also get a Ruger or S&W in that price range. Even a few Kimbers fall in there.

I would get a Series 70 style over a Series 80 style in a heartbeat.

My Kimber Warrior and Wilson Combat CQB are both Series 70 style.

I do like the Colts though.

If I ever get another 1911, I would like it to be a stainless steel model.

I like their whole line really. The I have a loaded, range officer, and a TRP. All great guns for what you pay for them. I really feel like you get your money's worth out of Springfield.

I would save a little more and buy a 1911 as close to how you envision it as possible. Customizing a 1911 takes some knowledge and tools...its not for the beginner in my opinion.

Springfield makes great guns that are in your budget.

i dont need to custimize it anytime soon and i would save and send it off for that. 1. Colt 2.SW 3. Ruger. i prefer the internal extractor but it doesnt have to be. for my first one i want it blued with a stainless barrel. If colts are too hard to come by, then where do i go to get a comparable model. I dont mind buying it from the makers website if its in my budget (i dont want to driveto hell and back 5 times looking for one)

+1

I have a S&W tactical and it is series 70 (no firing pin block). The trigger was buttery smooth out of the box but I added a Wilson Combat spring kit to bring it down to about 3.5lbs.

Ruger also has 2 great 1911s in the market (the Commander is new this year) and both are series 70 also. It is probably the best bang for the buck in an American 1911 and can be had from $650-$850 depending on where you buy it.

You also can't go wrong with a Springfield. My friend has an Operator and the thing runs like a top.

Rather than buy one locally, just look online at some stores and see what they have, or even Gun Broker or Guns America. Find a locally dealer that will accept transfers and have the 1911 shipped to them. Then pay their transfer fee and fill out the paperwork. The interwebz makes things much easier.

Here is my review of my 1911. The second video is on the upgrades I've done.

And for your viewing pleasure, here is my S&W with my buddy's Operator and a WW2 Remington Rand.

Perhaps if you plan on doing some customization down the road you should look into Rock Island Armory 1911. They are good 1911's at a low price and any smith can tailor it as you want to change it.

the ruger commander is fine, but i really would like a blued frame buttt It might make me change my mind. I like your S&W a lot too. The Tactical series may just have to come another day becuase of the price

what are some places to look for them thats not an auction site?

I doubt Bud's has them right now, but they had my exact one listed for a little under $1100 last I checked. They're probably out of stock though.

The only differences between the tactical model and the regular one are night sights and a rail. If you get the standard one with 3 dot sights and no rail, it's around $800-$900.

Thanks Dr! I think the S&W1911s are beautiful with the fish scale serrations. And the external extractor doesn't bother me at all. It would only bother me if it didn't work.

Does your S&W have the matte finish?

Yea. It's a matte stainless steel. It has a fully forged slide and frame, where the Ruger has a cast frame. I doubt you'd ever manage to break it but that is the reason it costs less.

The other S&W 1911s you can get are the black one (which I believe is melonite coated like their M&Ps) or a scandium-framed one. The scandium ones are mostly meant for CC but they are commander-sized. They are probably the sexiest ones out there. Here is the black one like mine with the scandium one below it.

I completely agree. That sexy thing will probably be my first Commander-sized 1911.
