Looking for summer vacation ideas, wife & kids would like us to find a cabin in the mountains somewhere. Preferably with a lake or something for fishing/swimming and with rafting/hiking nearby. The more private the better. Willing to travel anywhere in continental US. Need specifics, not a just a cool state or area. Won't say price is no object, but not looking for something cheap, has to be a nice cabin or house, not a hotel or campground. Some rich guy has got to have a country place he rents out somewhere. Any suggestions appreciated.

Big Cedar Lodge outside of Branson. Owned/affiliated with Bass Pro, located on Table Rock Lake. We went for Thanksgiving, however it would be a much better experience with the watersports during the summer.

I would look west, perhaps the rockies depending on how remote you want. We went to Breckenridge a couple of summers ago, and had an incredible time, but it wasn't remote. We stayed in town. Hiked, white water rafted, rode horses, drove to the top of Mt. Evans, (14k') panned for gold. It was a really good time. You can fly direct from NOLA to Denver pretty cheap on southwest.

Whatever the destination you decide, check out AirBnB and VRBO for cabin options...

Northern New Mexico (Angel Fire, Red River, Taos) is awesome is the summer. Golf, hiking, rafting, fishing and great scenery/weather. Probably cheaper than Colorado as well.

Lake Ouachita northwest of Hot Springs, Arkansas. You can go the cabin route or rent a houseboat for the week. It's bordered by Ouachita National Forest to the north and west and is a short distance from Hot Springs if the family wants some civilization for a day.

Rent a houseboat in Arkansas. I haven't been but know several people that have and its definitely on my list of places to go. Anchor up in a cove and hang out, BBQ, swim.

One of the first google links

Bring a boat and you can tow it around behind the houseboat to ski, tube, etc.

I talked to someone the other day who stayed at Moosehead Lake in Maine. Said it was really nice with great fishing and food. Said the lake cabin rentals were very reasonable too.

Cabin on a little island just off of the coast of Bar Harbor, Maine. Swim, fish, hike and whale watching.

Lake Tahoe

Can go rafting in Truckee, CA(there are companies that will come pick you up near South Lake Tahoe).

Can go hiking, mountainbiking, kayaking, parasailing, SUPing, fishing, etc., etc.

Casinos in South Lake Tahoe and lots of shopping, restaurants, etc. Heavenly Village is cool in the summer. Can take the gondola up the mountain where they have even more hiking, ziplining and ropes obstacle courses for adults and kids to play on(as well as breathtaking views of Lake Tahoe.

You can find tons of cabins that aren't too pricey. Obviously ones right on the lake will be $$$, but we've stayed in a gorgeous fully newly renovated cabin with a hot tub, 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms for like $1200 for 6 nights. We were only a 10 minute drive from the actual lake and South Lake Tahoe.
