Every time I go to make a bulk ammo purchase I look at the $300-600 tab in my virtual shopping car and think "I could get a cool gun with that money" and end up buying a new gun or building a new upper or lower instead. And for ammo I will will build up my supply slowly by buying a box here or a box there any time I'm at some place that sells ammo.

So now I'm down to about 120 rounds of 223 and 90 rounds of SS109/M855. I really should spend $350 and get 1k of some good 223 but that deal for $200 for a 9mm AR barrel + BCG + Buffer and another $150 for a 9mm lower to build a 9mm AR I have zero need for is instead getting more attention from my lizard brain. Someone help me stop the madness.

I would be in panic mode. If I don't have 5000 rounds of .223 at a minimum, my arse gets sweaty.

You cant shoot without ammo. Having those guns without ammo is useless.

What you really should do is buy 1-2k of 5.56 and then buy reloading equipment. The savings are crazy.

How hard is it to reload? I never looked into it at all.

OP I can't help I do the same thing. I should be buying a bunch of ammo but keep wanting more guns too. Once I build this sbr and get a ruger 22 lite pistol I'll work on ammo.

Can you explain the savings to me? Everyone I talk to who reloads tells me they do it for accuracy and the savings are negligent. How much per rd of 556 do you save?

If you go to the range and save brass from yourself and other people, you can get .223 down to 17 or 18 cents for cheap plinking stuff. And reloading isn't hard. Watch the bapple videos on it. I am about to start myself.

Man I have a few hundred each of 5.56 and 7.62x39 and I thought I was doing fine. If the shite goes down I'll just have to find an ammo hoarder and take his shite.

Right there with you. I spent $312.00 on prescriptions yesterday and was thinking it could have been used as "Tactical" money of some sort.

I managed to spend a couple of hundred dollars total on ammo Tuesday at Field & Stream and Lafayette Shooters. Both had great selections of 22LR and 9mm and it was all much cheaper than in NELA.

Looking at .03 for the primer
~ .03-.05 for powder
Bullet depends. You can find them pretty cheap or extremely expensive. Just depends.

Everything else is reusable.

Most of my pistols I just use lead to shoot

I have a Dillon RL55b. For volume I have loaded 50+ in 5 minutes.

For accuracy I slow down and am very precise with my powder and seating depth. I use my press as basically a single stage press.

Here's a "dirty, dark secret" about handloading........you probably won't save any money, but you'll shoot a lot more for the same amount of money Been handloading >30 years. It started out as a way for me to save money so I could shoot my 44 Mag Red Hawk more. Now it's integral to all my shooting. I don't remember the last time I shot a deer using factory ammo. When I go on a prairie dog hunt, I'll shoot about 100 rounds/day. Most of my guns have to be handloaded as they are wildcat rounds the factories don't load for (22 Rem BR, 6 Rem BR, 221 Rem Fireball, etc), factory ammo can't be found or factory ammo is cost prohibitive. I find handloading relaxing. There are considerable expenses up front, but after that it's mainly bullets, powder and primers. The 22 cal bullets I use on my pd hunts usually run 12-13 cents/round when bought in bulk, but I can sometimes find them cheaper at the Nosler blems/2nds store. Hornady V-Max and Z-Max bullets are least expensive quality bullet around when bought in #500 box. Nosler Varmageddon is also very inexpensive, yet very good bullet. Once you've determined your powder, if it's a gun you're going to shoot a lot, buy an 8# keg instead of 1# bottles and save more money. Doing it like this, the powder for my 221 Fireball only costs 6 cents/round.

honestly, with the current political climate, I'd say to focus on ammo.

A $1500 gun is no better than a $25 toy, if you don't have anything to feed it.
