Buying a bike

So I'm a little overwhelmed with what type of bike to purchase.
Mtn
Hybrid
Road
Cruiser
I want something I can ride. Recreationally, for exercise and getting around town, but would like something that can hold up if I take it down dirt roads etc.
Suggestions?

My favorite bike I have owned (and currently ride) is a FELT trail bike.
I then bought hybrid tires. They are somewhat smooth tread on the outside and have aggressive tread on the outside. I therefore can ride the roads and take it offroad.
I seldom ride trails anymore. But it is a great bike.

Ummmm. I tried to find a link and couldn't find anything like the one I bought.
The new lines are all over $2000. I bought mine for around $500.
Weird.
Great bike though!
