Buying 9 mm ammo as a Christmas gift. Please advise.

Looking to spend about $50 on 9 mm ammo. It's going to be a Christmas gift for a gun owner who loves going to the range. I don't own a gun, have never bought ammo, and am looking for advice on what/where to buy it.
A friend recommended I get FMJ ammo online. Thoughts?
