I'd much rather smell burning cane than feed lots or pig farms. The earth has never been pristine and never will be.

I don't mind burning cane fields, it is a necessary thing for the industry.

I do think there is a better option to just torching the fields, but it would take some investment and extra work to do it. LINK - Biochar Wikipedia

Edit: By alternatively trying to create biochar (think charcoal) for their own fields they can potentially reduce fertilizer costs in the future. They academics are still studying it to firmly prove yes or no.

My brother out in Cali told me about it and I added it to half my garden this summer. I thought it worked pretty well.

Do you believe that farmers should be allowed o dump their left over fertilizer in a ditch? What about washing their pesticide tanks out in the local Creek? Use ddt to poison the local deer population?

No, me neither.

These are extreme examples but it shows that cane burning is okay in my book.

I know cane is big bucks to the state but so is petro-chemical, they have much more stringent guidelines than agriculture. Bottom line it's about money.

All open burning is regulated by LDEQ. The farmers are subjected to the same regs as you are burning in your pasture.

Petro-chem industry is regulated by other agencies because most is involved in interstate commerce.

STFU.

Im not trying to be a dick but the things you listed are a perfect examples of how ignorant people are when it comes to farming and agriculture.

Fertilize is very expensive.
I can assure you nobody is "dumping" their leftovers in a ditch. Precision Ag is used today and whatever miniscule amount that may happen to be left over is pumped back into whatever holding tank that happens to be used and sent back to the dealer.
quote:

What about washing their pesticide tanks out in the local Creek?

Once again you are talking about $200-300 (per-gallon) products.
The vast majority of pesticides used are applied by air. Airports have holding tanks used for anyleftovers.
Once again precision Ag is used so the amount "leftovers" you refer to is little to non.
Not to mention the extensive procurement Ag chemical companies have to go through to minimize the effects of these products.
quote:

Use ddt to poison the local deer population?

DDT has been banned since damn near the Vietnam War.

Once again Im not trying to be an a-hole. Im on both sides of the farming industry, both production and sales.
The vast majority of the American population has no clue about this industry.

Once again, you're fricking stupid. I said that those were extremes but you lack reading comprehension skills. Thank you for telling me just how unreasonable my unreasonable scenarios were though.

Calm the frick down francis.
I don't think you understand how dumb people are, Which I've stated more than once.
If you knew all that stuff was far fetched, congratulations.
You're in the minority.
