Can someone explain the fanaticism behind these things?

Most LGS's will have them. Most big box sporting goods stores and Walmart won't.

I've seen two Delta Elites at my LGS's recently. I was quite shocked. Most stores I visit have 10mm ammo available.

Not in Slidell or Covington. Last time I got it from Academy was at the height of the ammo shortage 3 years ago. Last time I actively sought it out at academy I asked the guy at the counter. There's signs on the shelves that say "don't see it, we can order it". So I asked and he looked it up. Found 3 different SKU numbers then ran them and all 3 came back as discontinued but Blazer was the brand I used to get when I got it from Academy. It was one of the only ammunitions that I could walk into the store and walk out with every time I went during the shortage.

Is the maintenance on a 1911 really that much? Do you really have to spend a lot to get it tuned? I just read this in some article.

I said this in other posts but I have alot of 1911s. Ranging from DW, Baer, Brown, and Wilson. I would not get a 1911 less than a DW. They are much too finicky especially if you are trusting your life to its operation. If you get a DW or greater quality 1911 it will run just fine with little to no hiccups other than maybe having to tune the extractor to get it right. However with 1911s of that quality the tolerances are very very tight and they need to be run WET. I'm talking Mobil 1 dripping wet.

1. It's a Colt; 2. It's a 1911; 3. It's 10mm.

My 42 yr old Colt Gold Cup 45 and 27 year old Delta Elite beg to differ with your "finicky" assessment. I've run reloads, cheap monarch and blazer(brass and steel cased), federal hydrashok, Winchester white box, Armscor, PPU and many other brands that I can't think of right now and have never had any issues. Not even having to tune the extractor or slather it with lube as you mention for your precious Dan Wesson.

Not taking anything away from DW or other high end 1911's but keep it cleaned and lubed properly and handle it responsibly(Don't bash it around) and even the $350 Rock Island Armory 1911's will perform flawlessly (barring any unforseen defects, obviously)...

Dude, this isn't true. I have seen your "tight" tolerance guns run bone dry like Wilson and they work just fine.
Edit:just light oil in high friction areas is enough, they don't need to be run sopping wet.

I have a Delta Elite, a para expert commander and a Springfield Champion.

The delta elite would hang up the first time I took it out to shoot it and have not had a single hiccup since (around 750-1000 rounds). The para has never had a hiccup and the champion absolutely hates semi wadcutters. It won't hardly shoot them.
