Send him. There's only so many chances to hunt with Powpow, don't let him miss one.

Same with Uncle.

Truth is, neither will replace you. Any hunt he makes with you will still be special.

Besides, maybe Powpow can "learn him to set still an quiet" before you take him. lol

I'm still not much of a hunter, but my first time was with my uncle. My grandpa wasn't a hunter, but loved to shoot. My dad hunted with them some when he was younger but he's not into it at all. I spent many mornings in a shooting house in southwest Alabama with my uncle. I even went with some of my parents friends when I was young as well. I see nothing wrong with your son going with relatives.

OK, now same thing, but what if it's not Pow Pow, but maternal uncle who lives in the same area? That guy's kids are grown, and I think he really enjoys taking my son out on the property.

Any time spent with a positive male role model is a good thing for a boy. Boys learn a lot from the older generations and the older generations enjoy passing things down to them. Its not a replacement for doing things with Dad, but it does help the child grow.

Pow Pow, Great Uncle, close family friend... let him go if the opportunity is there.

especially if he's not shooting. I did this, but wanted to reserve the shooting part for when I could take him.

My son seems to take advice much better from anyone other than me anyhow.

Be glad he wants to get the ball rolling. Too many kids have too much to do to like hunting. He may get hooked on it and be pushing you to take him from now on.

Let him go. You'll get your opportunity to hunt with him.

It should be your son's choice. I would let him go if he wanted.

My first hunt was with my dad when I was 5, but I grew up hunting with my paw paw mostly because my dad was gone in the oilfield for a month at a time. I'll always cherish the memories I have growing up hunting with him.

I killed my first deer with my grandpa actually filming it. Nothing will beat those memories.

I say let him go. Killed my first deer with my grandfather, the only time I've ever seen him that proud was when I graduated Marine boot camp. I was probably like 10-12 when I killed my first deer, I'm 22 now and my grandfather is on oxygen 24/7 now. He's not hunting this year and it breaks my heart. Old man just can't do it anymore. Same with LSU games. Held season tix for ~30 years, he'll only get to go to one or two games this year.

You'll have time to go with him, like my dad did with me, but doing something like that with a grandfather is very special. You won't get a whole lot of opportunities for that.

No deer were seen, but he had a great time.

Cutting lanes

Checking out the pond

Testing the wheeler

I wish I could talk to my pawpaws right now. Send the boy with his. You have more seasons left with him than your pop does.

Grandfathers have the luxury of being able to teach boys stuff that parents should refrain from. How to light a cigarette, open a beer, spit, hold the light while he shot, all skills I learned from my grandfather.

ETA. I see I was a little slow on the draw. Uncles are even better. They get to teach nephews even more borderline skills
