I have had my license plate stolen twice in the last year. What is the law on having it on your trailer? Can't you just have it in your truck while trailering boat? Do you have to have it physically attached to the trailer?

In FL you do. I had one stolen & I made a police and got a replacement for free. I think you just need to find a better way to mount so it's harder to steal. Granted you can't stop someone if they're hellbent on stealing it though.

Saw one going down the road with the license plate mounted on what looked like a little 90 degree aluminum thing that was bolted to a small clamp. He had that clamped onto his power pole. I guess he would just toss it in his truck when the boat wasn't moving.

Seen a bunch of skiffs with their plates mounted to clips that snapped onto the poling platform.

Looks like a solid idea

I bolted mine with lock nuts. The idea being most plate thieves have only a screw driver and not a wrench.

or use hex or something not standard. or you can throw a quick tack weld on the nut

I think "legally" you're supposed to have it on the trailer, but I know several guys that just carry it in their trucks and have never been stopped.
