Looking for a 16/42 with a 40hp. Would like a fishing deck front and back but have a tiller motor. I have viewed the tracker pro and as a package they look nice but the steering column won't work for fishing the marsh.

Alweld has a few nice boats but seems that having a tiller handle motor exempts having any sort of back fishing deck.

Maybe it's a this or that thing but was hoping for some feedback for a boat that can fish in lacassine or big burns while also having a back deck to fish from. My goals are to take my 79yr old dad as well as my almost my to old to be seen with dad daughter with ease of fishing for both. Toledo bend fishing albeit in shallow areas, is a want as well.

Any suggestions?
TIA

Haven't heard of them, will look into it, thanks

Had a friend recommend a tahatsu motor, thoughts on that?

My current leaking arse riveted fisher marine has a Merc 25 that is twenty years old and still runs. My only experience with motors.

Do you really want a back deck for a 79 year old? Wouldn't that make it harder on him? And I realize some old folks are in better shape than others, I just know my paw paw would have a tough time climbing up and down a deck all day.

But to answer your question, war Eagle looks to have some with a back deck. I have a 14' and it's been a good boat, pretty rugged for a little Jon boat.

This. I would look for something with a wider bottom. A rocking boat and a 79 years oldman do not mix well. Also, a tiller motor, fishing with said oldman, you will be moving back and forth changing places. That will be a killer on a oldman climbing over crap very fast.

Let me stick up for the old man.....he didn't get to be 79 by being a pussy.....he can handle anything thrown his way.

My 14' has decks on both ends (4' front, 4' rear) and a steering console. That only leaves 6' in between. By the time I get ice chests, rods, and tackle boxes in, it's a balancing act moving around the boat. Good choice on the tiller motor.

I looked at Southfork, but I remember the weight capacity being lower than other similar boats. The girl at the boat dealership couldn't give me a reason.

F&F Boats is worth looking into, but they are all custom made to your specs. SeaArk is another sturdy boat.

I would definitely look at a wider boat than a 16x42. I have a 15x42 right now and will likely upgrade in the next year or so to a 16x60.

How much are you looking to spend? There was a good Hewes Tailfisher for sale the other day. Those are nice stable hulls with wide open flat decks. The poling platform is low and forward of the motor so it makes for a nice place place to sit and fish. They float skinny as well as run incredibly shallow.

Southfork is a solid boat. There are several other solid welded boats like Southfork that come from rural Arkansas, including Alweld, Weldbilt and F&F Custom. Any of these will custom build for about the same price as their production boats. If you want a platform, they can do a platform. They can also put a handhold up there for the "non-pussy" dude in his 70s.

I'd go 52. Take a look at SeaArk. I have no direct experience with Tohatsu, but they have a great reputation as being long-lasting bullet proof motors over at The Hull Truth and I think also in the sailing community. I'd buy one.

And by rear deck, do you mean a polling platform, or just a deck level with the gunnels that you can stand on to fish? I don't see how a tiller handle would interfere with that, you can just fold the handle up.

Try south fork

My surface drive is a South Fork hull and it's a strong little boat. I'd recommend it if they can make what you are looking for.

They don't take 12-gauge shots too well though

I had a typo, did mean a 52 bottom.

I'm usually up front working trolling motor, wanted a back deck that can be fished from, with a chair or maybe even just a butt seat that has enough floor area for someone (dad) to be comfortable with.

Thanks all for the recommendations. I will look into those.

Stay away from South fork boats...they are cheap made aluminum cans. made from .80 or .90 Aluminum....dont buy one made with less than 1.00 or thicker....if not they will have endless problems with cracks, leaks, and vibration breaking the welds....Been there done that....stay away from ALL the tin can boats and get something with some meat

Had a War Eagle with a 40hp Honda 4 stroke tiller, great boat and if I needed a small boat I would buy another.

I run a southfork 1446 jet tunnel and I have hit logs and rock bars wide open and have no leaks yes a thicker boat is a better option but u have to consider weight when running and planning out. I run the bogua chitto with a jet drive so that maters..As far a the weight compasidy being lower I'm guessing it is because southfork has no flotation/foam in them. War eagle makes an awesome bass style boat if u want more of a bass type set up instead of a john boat

I bought a 16 ft xpress duck boat a year ago with a 50 merc tiller. full deck in the back. rod storage compartment along the side. plenty of room in the middle of the boat.

the same boat comes in a 15 ft version and a 40 would be perfect for it.
