Family of five. I live in North LA and would do 60% of my fishing in fresh water lakes. The other 40% of the time would be spent around Hackberry or similar. Not looking to go offshore. What size and type of boat should I be looking for?

At least a minimum of 24' whatever you go with. I have four and 22 feet feels tight at times

Not often. Probably 3-4 max fishing at a time, but would like enough room to comfortably cruise with the entire family on occasion. Is a Bay Boat the only viable option for fresh and salt water?

Probably your best choice if you are a hardcore fisherman. There are some other options if you plan on using it more for pleasure cruising.

There are pontoon boats that would have plenty of room. Personally I have no use for one but lots of people like them for fishing and pleasure cruising.

I also have a family of 5. I have a 22 foot bay boat. A 24 foot would be nice but not necessary. Usually when I bring the whole family fishing I am helping the kids more than fishing myself. 2 fish off the front and 2 fish off the back. No problem. 5 poles out at once works but have to be careful no matter the size of the boat. The high sides of the bay boat are good if you have little ones. Also good at pulling tubes.

Nautic Star makes a hybrid type of center console boat in 2 sizes. You may want to check out.

211 Coastal

Bass boat would be a NO GO for me with the family. Also check out the Sea Ark Big Easy for more of a hybrid in an aluminum platform.
