I am keeping my boat in a slip that has no electricity. I have a solar battery charger, but with all of the crazy weather we have had in NOLA lately I have found myself hooking up a portable car battery jumper to dump the bilge after it has run so long the battery dies. Is there a better way?

How long is it going between charges? Most bilge pumps should draw a low amount of juice. Are you sure you battery isnt going bad?

What about the switch for the bilge pump? is it cutting on/off properly or running too much?

What about a mooring cover to shed water?

mooring shed not possible, pump seems to be in working order. This happened twice with all the bad weather we've had. A day after I pump the bilge with the jumper solar panel has battery fully charged and boat starts no prob. Wondering if there is anything I need to add to help hold charge?

A cloth cover, not a shed.

Have you checked your sacrificial anode recently.

You might have corrosion that caused a short.

Thats a good point. It sounds like you have a draw other than the bilge pump to be killing the battery that fast.

How is your wiring run? Are you using a Perko?

Sounds like a short.

Get a canvas cover or a tarp or something.

No electrical guy here, but, my boat has a Perko and the bilge still works with the Perko in the OFF position. It's suppose to work. You may have to put the boat on the trailer and disconnect the bilge (make sure all drain plugs are open) and see if there is still a drain on the battery. Then again it could be the battery.

I've got a similar problem. Pulled my plug the other day after fishing and rinsing out my boat and a good bit of water poured out. I've got my bilge hot wired to a battery so it comes on automatically but it wasn't working. I flipped the bilge swith to manual and it started pumping so I figured either the float was stuck or a bad connection on the hot wire. Well, I tow the boat home and when I get home I go around my boat to get something and the bilge is running. Checked the switch and it was off. Flipped it on and then off and it stopped. Guess the float is sticking on and off?

Trash in the bilge can and will find it's way under the float switch for your pump. Those float switches do go bad too which will run down house power.

OP, how much house power do you have? Just one battery? If so, better add a second battery or you will find your boat on the bottom.
