I have a ~6 month old rescue that appears to have a lot of pointer in him, and seems to have a good nose and an interest in birds and ducks in the backyard. Couple of questions:

Is it worth spending money training a Heinz 57? And if so, who to talk to? I have some connections to guys that train for ducks but not birds.

I got him as a buddy to hang out with, so I won't be offended if you guys that know more than me tell me to keep him in that boat.

Probably not, bird dogs come with 90% of their hunting ability built in, if you are seeing it now, you will continue to see it. The key to a young dog, if you want to hunt, is it spend lots of time with it, take it on walks off a leash. A shock good collar might be needed to keep it honest. A shock collar is not a torture device and most dogs need little more than a tickle to get them to remember to listen to commands.

You have any pics of the pup?

The hardest thing about having a good bird dog, is having a dog that is hunting for you and not running off...

Thanks wick. I knew you'd know, and having had a Golden Retriever with all the bloodlines, I understand. She came out of her momma ready to retrieve. I'll post some pics right after I have my parking lot throwdown with No8 here in a few.

will he point?

if he will point you are 1/3 of the way there - the rest is polishing.

1. is it birdy?

2. does it like to fetch?

training a dog that is an obedient hunting companion is not that difficult.

ie.. they don't pick fights with every dog they come in contact. doesn't run off and eat birds.... doesn't try to take birds away from other dogs...

the don't break on every point, shot, flush etc... Im of the long long held opine that a retriever that breaks is simply not ready to hunt....

training dogs to win field trial ribbons is a whole nuther matter....

and popeye the sailor is a fruit......

in quail country the lab wouldn't be within earshot of the GSPs unless they were 3 legged GSPs

to find wild quail a dog must cover considerable amounts of landscape.

I have been on many many quail hunts over the years... I have yet to see a lab do even a reasonable job at finding wild quail...... woodcock.. marginal at best and even those are very rare.

GSP's are pointers and not flushers. If they flush all the time they are a worthless pointer. We send in the labs or spaniels as flush dogs. BTW, I grew up with nothing but English setters, English pointers and Labrador retrievers. I now have a GSP and this dog will run circles around the above mentioned in overall drive, brains and trainability. I never thought I'd say that but seeing is believing. Don't get me wrong I still love a Lab (and most Setters) but I've never seen anything like these GSP's. Most people are under the agreement that Germans over time have been the finest engineers. Well they hit a home rum with this breed. Just freakin machines and tenacious hunters.

A majority of shorthairs coming from hunting lines are going to be very smart by dog standards. I have seen them manipulate soft minded individuals...
